By transforming non-theatrical spaces into performance venues, Chashama works to place performance in the midst of every day life: vacant buildings house theatrical installations; midtown stores offer dance to passers-by. Currently located a block from Times Square, the company brings risky, accessible and vital work to the city's most commercially saturated area. Chashama challenges the notion that live performance is an art form in decline by sponsoring individual artists and by presenting new performance work that attracts nontraditional audiences. About Windows on 42nd Street A festival of site-specific art and performance in the heart of the city Co-Curated and Co-Produced by Laura Barnett and Caterina Bartha (New York, NY) chashama presents Windows on 42nd Street, a festival of art and performance taking place in the storefront windows of 125, 129, and 135 W. 42nd Street. Over a span of four months the festival will feature 200 artists representing over 40 companies. The event opens on March 18th and runs through June 15th, 2002. Admission is free. Windows on 42nd Street will feature visual art, performance, installation, video, music and interactive work representing a broad spectrum of ideas and aesthetic genres all presented in store front windows on 42nd Street, in the heart of Times Square. The artists, from various backgrounds, are challenged by the presentation style as well as the location of the exhibition spaces. The festival will showcase some of the most daring and exciting work in New York City. A schedule of artists, performance dates and biographies will follow. The show is co-curated and co-produced by Laura Barnett and Caterina Bartha. *According to the Times Square BID, West 42nd Street is one of the most heavily trafficked pedestrian streets in the world; Windows on 42nd Street will be one of the most accessible public arts events ever. __________________________________________________
