BLACK ANARCHISM by Ashanti Alston This talk explores the history and possible future of black anarchism. It covers anarchistic elements in African traditions, anti-authoritarian moments in America’s black liberation movement, and the possible contours of a black anarchism for the new millennium. Ashanti Alston is a former member of the Black Panther Party and former prisoner-of-war (Black Liberation Army). He is presently a member of Estacion Libre/People of Color Zapatista Support Group, a board member of the Institute for Anarchist Studies, and the Northeast U.S. Coordinator for Critical Resistance. The Institute for Anarchist Studies is a nonprofit foundation established in 1996 to support the development of anarchism. We are primarily a grant-giving organization for radical writers: we have funded over thirty projects by authors from countries such as Argentina, Canada, Chile, Ireland, Mexico, Nigeria, Germany, South Africa, and the United States. The Student Liberation Action Movement (SLAM) is a multi-racial student and youth organization dedicated to defending public education and resisting the still-growing culture of incarceration. O – what is "new" in what Ashanti is saying?

That we shouldn't recognize political reality? That we should dismiss revolutionary organization? That we should adopt this silly anti-authoritarian thing? How is that new? I swear it's just the same old ultra-democratic, process-oriented shit from the 60s. That said, I respect what Ashanti's trying to do.

But what is "new?" Please tell me.

It might be too much work, but there might be some wacky program out there that can do it... But what about having a written copy of the discussion up? I'm very interested in the discussion that occurred, but don't have the facilities to listen to it.
Also, two benefits for one act, the other would be acknowledgement of those not lucky enough to have hearing capabilities. Read an article recently on the neglect of deaf, mute and blind people/activists and the amount of censorship they're forced to endure. Just a thought.
