I simply hear the same range of arguments I heard during the Vietnam war. The chickenhawks and other enraged folks on the right say the same things they said 35 years ago. Idiocy then and now. Back then it was 'my country, love it or leave it' which confused dissent for lack of love. However, the most notable of our country's founders and subsequent leaders emphasized the virtues of dissent - even when powers were arrayed against you and even if your opinion was not popular with segments of the population.

So I am not sorry freepers. You cannot shut us up and more and more people are coming to agree with Cindy and the rest of the millions of us. There aren't enough 'camps' across the country to hold us all.

Folks commenting on this list should probably only respond to those with something constructive to say vs the trolls ranting and raving.

All I did was ask if it was about the tent! I'm no conservative. I've since learned it was because they didn't have a permit for the sound system. If it wasn't that, they'd probably have gotten arrested for not having a rally permit.

My point was that Zool is being irresponsible. He should ditch the tent and get permits, OR, Cindy Sheehan should've ditch him, because he's a walking setup for negative police attention. Instead of Cindy giving an uninterrupted speech and the world hearing about it, it became Zool's struggle to be lawless. In a really minor way, but still, that's a totally separate protest from Cindy's, which is about getting the kids out of Iraq, now.

Cindy's message was diluted and won't get heard now because Zool has an agenda that apparently includes struggling with cops about petty issues, like getting permits (or maybe it's just laws, in general?) That pretty much guarantees that any rally Zool holds will get busted up by the cops.

If you want to consider me a conservative, that's your problem (I'm for social democracies, fwiw, and I'm a veteran of the first Iraq war), but the fact remains that Cindy's rally didn't have to get shut down.

I mean, even if they were , it would not matter, but the faces in Cindy's crowd look middle-aged and older. Gosh they look older than the cops! It looks downright silly for them to break up Cindy's peace rally

Yes, Zool erred but only if you think he shouldn't have caused himself to be arrested. But one of the points of protest theatre is to BE arrested (for something trivia) to create press of some sort. And, of course, if enough get arrested as in the 60's/70's then you over whelm the policia as well. More theatre.

I consider myself a liberal if anything and I was 20 feet from the towers when the first plane hit and I have never heard a sane person, liberal or conservative, say, "I like New York City more without the towers." I also don't eat babies, I'm not a cannibal, and I'm not a pediphile. It wouldn't surprise me if you accused liberals of being pediphiles in your next post.

I was also in the Army for a number of years and served in Desert Storm. Back then, I never heard anything about what was going on at home, I was just concerned with watching football on the Armed Forces Network so that I could have some semblance of normalcy. Everyone in my unit was the same. Military people fight because that's what they do. They also have their own brains. They can determine for themselves what is right and wrong. It has been said before that the soldiers are wondering why they are there. Saddam wasn't behind the 9-11 plot. Sure, he was an awfully brutal dictator that needed to be removed, but what about Sudan, N. Korea. Our military could be saving millions of lives right now, but instead we are hanging on to this myth that we can make Iraq a democracy? Who are we to tell the world that a democracy is what evryon should be when we aren't a democracy either? American Democracy is a myth. Educate yourself.

Now about this rally:

I don't know the details anymore than the rest of you, except for the ones that were there so I'll refrain from commenting seriously. What I do know is that I've heard Islamic radicals speaking in Union Square before as I came up from the subway and thought, "I may not like it, but I guess it i free speech because he's not on private property, and he's not hurting anyone." I guess it's different when you are trying to protest Bush's war.

And I'll say this also. I would never want my mother touring the globe if I was killed in Iraq.

Arrests bring attention. Maybe not always the right kind, but if Zool isn't whining about "poor me", he's no fool, he's just a little more dedicated that you (ie, risking arrest to promote our right to speak, rather than sitting home name-calling on Indymedia)

Leave it to a friend of Mitch the subway publishing guy to get himself arrested for operating a sound system in a NYC Park without a permit.

Zool was looking for attention and the pigs obliged him.

The question remains, was theater Cindy's purpose? From the photos and from other people's posted comments, it doesn't sound like she was on-board for the rally to be broken up. She looks surprised and concerned in the photos.

Cindy and whoever's guiding her on this cross-country journey would be well advised to ask in advance if the next Camp they visit is legal with permits and all.

I don't disagree that there's some value to having a bit of theater. The question is, does that help or hinder Cindy?

Consider that most of the police in the U.S. find any possible excuse (and often no execuse at all) to break up protests. In the public's eye, that is what has become of demos: an ambiguous theater of struggle between protesters and cops, with a backdrop of counter protesters, with a voice-over of vague, disconcerting words from the 6pm tv news anchor.

So it's not a positive image that inspires many more people to get involved. People in their 20s and 30s who are not already on the hippie track are looking at us like we're stoned left-overs from the 60s. People like that need to know that their convictions won't be rewarded with pepper spray, and with people like Zool who are willing to get arrested to make a point, well, you get the idea.

I lost two people in my community. My neighbor who is a New York City Police Officer had gotten off early that morning for a doctors appointment and had he not had that appointment...he'd be dead today. Leaving behind four children....his wife passed away in 2001. Now we've both heard one another's sob story....how does that relate to the topic at hand? It doesn't, so let's move on okay?

You know Brian. I have no problem with people disagreeing with the war. In fact I encourage all to speak out. But when their words and actions start affecting others in a bad way, I get upset. I get upset when American soldiers write home perplexed at the way our media portrays them and what they do. I get upset that our media doesn't report the good that they have done and are doing and if you are so much for free speech, then why aren't we hearing more from these soldiers in the media? We aren't and do you know why? Because our media is biased and has been for a very long time. Portraying the soldiers who go above and beyond their duty for the people of Iraq is something we don't see but I do hear about from many many soldiers serving now. So pardon me if I get upset and concerned that they think all Americans think like the liberal media. It's difficult trying to convince them that not all Americans hate them and what they are doing. You served in the first Gulf War and you had the full support of this country behind you. My brother who served in that war did as well, so only imagine coming home finding the liberals throwing blood, spewing that they are glad the Twin Towers are gone, and trying to be proud of the accomplishments you made and left behind in Iraq.

One more thing Brian....Saddam allowed Al Quaeda to train inside of Iraq. Al Quaeda was behind 9/11. You do the math.

The only people I've seen joking about disaster are the conservatives at National Review Online about Katrina.

And what's more, unlike Chickenhawks like yourself, the people with Cindy Sheehan are Iraqi vets or the families of people in Iraq. People like you always support a war you don't have to fight in. Go enlist, then come back and cheerlead. Until then, just FOAD.

I find it fascinating that you invoke both the spector of Chappaquiddick and your "knowledge" of how troops think, yet I wonder how the fact that Laura Bush was drunk driving when she killed a boyfriend as a young woman doesn't somehow disqualify her as a First Lady escapes you, or how the fact that you offer no evidence of having served a single day in the military, nor show no shred of interest in taking up arms against Iraqi insurgents, qualifies you as an expert in military psychology.

Just as an FYI, I served six years active duty Army - in the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) at Campbell, and a stint with the 3rd I.D. in B.K. Germany - both in field artillery. My unit at Ft. C did a six-month stint on MFO duty in Sinai Peninsula in '85 and I lost five bros when an Arrow Air jet crashed on take-off at Gander, Newfoundland just before Christmas that same year. Come to find out, the Reagan Administration knew it was Islamic Jihad who downed the jet, thanks to a bunk load of arms sent to them by Ollie North as payment for the release of American hostages ("We don't deal with terrorists" - remember?) - but the government whitewashed the whole thing, blaming it on "icing on the wings." I've witnessed firsthand the political machinations that render all patriotic blather and nationalistic horsecrap moot. So, in the end, you'll pardon me if I say that your opinion as to what troops in Iraq are affected by, or what the insurgency is affected by in the way of American public sentiment, is of neglible value - at BEST.

In the end, you're a Bush apologist who is incapable of rational thought, or of understanding anything beyond a pre-digested sound-byte spoon-fed to you by this corporo-fascist cabal.

Except maybe another excuse for Barrymore to use the "Hitler" analogy once more. I've got a few buddies over in Iraq right now who are not ready to leave. They've made friends with quite a few Iraqi families who happen to be grateful that they are there. Noone is going to convince them to leave these people at this moment and time.

I'm no Bush fan, but their has got to be something more we as a country can do than fight amongst ourselves and call eachother names.
