The Stolen Lives Induction Ceremony is a solemn yet empowering event, where families and other loved ones of recent victims of police violence are joined and supported by other families of Stolen Lives and many others from all sections of the community. We come together to uphold the memories of those killed, and to affirm our resolve to continue and to escalate the struggle for justice and against the epidemic of police violence and murder.
At this fifth ceremony that took place in NYC, seven Stolen Lives were inducted, where families of these Stolen Lives were presented with certificates from allies in the struggle against police brutality.
- The mother of Gregory Chavis (killed by NYPD October 2004) was presented with a certificate by civil rights attorney Lynne Stewart
- The family of Scott Eriksen (killed by Suffolk County police June 2005) was presented with a certificate by Haitian community activist Ernest Banatte
- The mother of Jamil Moore (killed by NYPD September 2002) was presented with a certificate by activist Nellie Bailey of the Harlem Tenants Council
- The sister and friend of Silverio Del Rios (died under questionable circumstances at Elmira Correctional Facility October 2003) was presented with a certificate by Martha Laureano of the Justice Committee of the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights (also the widow of Richie Perez)
- The parents of Donte Pomar (killed by NYPD July 2004) was presented with a certificate by WBAI radio show host and activist Sally O’Brien
- The mother of Randy Weaver (killed by East Orange police July 1999) was presented with a certifate by Larry Hamm of the People's Organization for Progress
Also in attendance were families who have had their loved ones inducted in years past: emcees Nicholas Heyward, Sr., father of Nicholas Heyward, Jr. (killed by NYPD September 1994) amd Juanita Young, mother of Malcolm Ferguson (killed by NYPD March 2000), Margarita Rosario, mother of Anthony Rosario, Jr., aunt of Hilton Vega (killed by NYPD January 1995), Lillian Flores and David Munoz, the parents of Frankie Arzuaga (killed by NYPD January 1996), and Jackie Nixon, aunt of Jamel Nixon (killed by NYPD January 2003).
Speaking at the ceremony on the responsibility of black press to cover the issue of police brutality was Herb Boyd of the Amsterdam News, and performing poetry and music were Ngoma, Taiyo Na, Jones, Danette Chavis (mother of Gregory Chavis), Koba (from Kontrast), and Kongo.
