Yay for mexican cattles drives!

These mega-marchas aren't an end in themselves as is the case with the UFPJ cattle drives. They are one of many tactics used by a Oaxacan popular movement that certainly doesn't shy away from militant direct action.

Why a mega-march? It allows the Oaxacan movement to flex its muscles and send a powerful message to the rest of Mexico that they are many and they aren't going away. It also allows the various elements in the movement that have been dispersed to unite and reaffirm their unity and control of the situation. A good "pep rally" isn't such a bad thing for people who've been risking their lives day and nights at the barricades. I would imagine each person at that rally will return to their various tasks that much more energized. If only North American activists had such a clear understanding of goals-strategy-tactics and how to create a dynamic mass movement for radical social change.

The sign that reads "Nos Vemos en 2010" ("See you in 2010") w/ a picture of Zapata on it says a lot if you know a little bit of Mexican history.

Seems like more than just a "cattle drive" to me. These people aren't melting away in the face of violent police pressure.

They can attract more participants in the protest, more support, by these kinds of shows of strength, especially now that they are gaining international media attention.

I wonder how the local troops can contemplate fighting with academics, students, mothers and grandmothers, ordinary civilians, in such numbers.

And since the norwegian (or even european) press says just about nothing about these events that are going on now, it is the more inspiring to see these pictures of the mexican people standing up against the unjust situation they are in. Keep it up!!!

not withstanding the insensitivity and inane comments that these photos may bring, i want to thank indymedia for posting them. they bring truth to the lies created by our own mainstream press and the lies that the URO administration continues to put out there about the numbers and the protesters ("they are all leftist/anarchists"--i see every demographic of oaxacans represented in support of the march and marching.

It is a wonderful site! People are the country's largest, most persuasive, change provoking resource. If only more people realized it and applied it than things like senseless wars, meaningless deaths, tyrant govs would be less occurring around the world

Oaxaca is now occupied by the Federal Police and, for the most part, is quiet and empty, well, dead really. The Megamarch was a happy jolt of energy and enthusiasm. It brought hope. Tens of thousands of marchers walking, running, chanting and singing down the street! This in comparison to a few thousand soldiers spending their days glaring out from behind barbed wire.

Many thanks to those marchers, their beliefs and their dedication!

I love Oaxaca and have visited there many times. This has been coming for a long time, and I am sorry it has come to this. Your photos moved me to tears. The zocalo in Oaxaca is beautiful... truly Oaxaca's "living room". To see razor wire surrounding it is beyond terrible. Everyone - Send prayers to your preferred god to protect and support the people of Oaxaca.

Es necesario extender la lucha y la huelga a nivel nacional para asegurar una verdadera victoria, si bien algunos sectores han parado labores, ejemplo los trabajadores y estudiantes del CCH Sur, y otros han detenido el flujo vehícular de las principales avenidas en la Cd. d' Méx. no basta con eso, debemos parar en seco esta andanada de la represión capitalista de toda la burguesía mexicana, lacaya del imperialismo norteamericano. Ninguna confianza a políticos, partidos, organizaciones burgueses para pedir la solución, sino hay que basarnos en el poder de la clase obrera y de sus aliados los explotados y oprimidos, por eso hay extender una verdadera solidaridad, y que mejor muestra que realizar una huelga nacional.

I as well as many Americans have spent time and studied Spanish in Oaxaca. While there I have some of the best memories of my life as to the family I lived with as well as the culture and the people I had met.

I also remember the great disparities between rich and poor and will never forget these images.
