On Sunday February 4th, workers at TNC took down a set and were socializing after wards. Primy Rivera, an actor and husband of one of the founders of the theater, entered the building with his brother Mikey, (both known for thier violent backgrounds.) They harrassed May Day Books volunteer Demian, and tried to provoke him into fight, but he refused. Primy attacked Demian; volunteer stagehand Jon Worthely moved to intervene, and Primy punched Jon in the face, breaking his nose. Primy then punched Demian twice in the face and eye, taking him to the floor in a head lock. Meanwhile, Mikey was strangling Jon with an extension cord. The attackers were then subdued by other members of the group. Later, a woman who witnessed the violence was told by Mikey, (currently out on parole,) that if she said anything he'd kill her.

Theater for the New City is a not-for-profit community theater and cultural center, sponsors an arts and education program for children, and is a member of Theaters Against the War.

May Day Books & Infoshop is a collectively organized not-for-profit association that operates a radical/anarchist bookshop in the front lobby of its landlord TNC.

Initially the victims decided against going to the police, in favor of mediation with TNC administrators Crystal Field, (executive director,) and Marc Marcante, (production director.) But the next day Primy was still working at the theater and no steps had been taken to address concerns for public safety. Crystal said that if Demian went to the police she would evict the bookstore. Later, Marc informed Demian that the May Day was evicted because there was graffiti on the building, and letters to the theater, criticizing the administration's handling of the incident.

After agonizing attempts to mediate, a police report was finally made on Thursday night, and Primy was arrested on Friday night, during the rehearsal of Crystal's children play, Uncle Wiggly, at TNC. Mikey, who made the death threat, is still at large.

Between 11pm Friday night and 6pm Saturday night, someone snipped the lock of May Day's cash drawer and took $73.26. Marc then demanded that Demian to return the front door key. Another police report was filed.

As of Saturday night Crystal and Marc banned Jon Worthely from the theater.

Please write call TNC and express your concern and outrage for this blatant condoning of violence, and retaliation against the victims.
