Between 500 and 1000 people organized by a coalition of between 25 and 50 progressive, anti-war, Marxist, labor, and community organizations braved the sweltering heat in Newark New Jersey to protest the war in Iraq and to call for univeral health care.

Congressmen John Conyers spoke at the rally and congressman Donald Payne was in attendence. Conyers pointed out that the only member of the NJ Congressional delegation to sign on to HR 676 for univeral health care has been Donald Payne and urged Rush Holt and other members of the NJ delegation to sign on with him.

Conyers took some criticism for his failure to bring impeachment resolutions against Bush or Cheney. Amira Baraka spoke later and defended Conyers against his critics, suggesting they were white, suburban leftists who didn't sufficiently understand Conyers history as an anti-imperialist advocate in Congress.

The police presence was very low key and the community was generally sympathetic.
