DEMONSTRATION TO BE HELD TO OPPOSE GHI/HIP PRIVATIZATION
The Coalition Against Privatization Calls for Demonstrations Outside Insurance Commissioner’s Office in Opposition of the Privatization of GHI/HIP

The Coalition Against Privatization will hold a demonstration in front of the Manhattan office of the New York State Superintendent of Insurance, Eric Dinallo, at 25 Beaver Street (4/5 to Bowling Green, J/M/Z to Broad St , R/W to Whitehall St , 1 to Rector St, 2/3 to Wall St, A/C to B'way-Nassau)on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 4:30 PM. The demonstration will be held to urge the Superintendent to deny the request by not for profit health insurance companies, GHI and HIP, to convert to a for-profit company called Emblem Health.

On December 17, 2007 GHI and HIP filed for permission to convert in to a for-profit company. The merger of these two companies will result in the creation of a company with a monopoly status over the healthcare plans of municipal workers in New York City with nearly 93% of the work force insured by GHI or HIP. This means that a 1% increase in premiums will result in a $27.5 million charge against the budget of New York City; An increase that will ultimately result in higher premiums for city employees. Representatives of GHI/HIP have refused to guarantee that if granted for-profit status premiums will not be raised. Neither state officials, nor union leadership has spoken out against the conversion since each stand to gain substantial payouts.

Privatization will certainly mean higher premiums, this is especially damaging for those people who are on fixed incomes. At a public hearing on January 29th out of nearly 300 people, mostly retirees, 99% spoke out against the proposed privatization. Coalition Against Privatization calls for increased pressure on the State Superintendent of insurance by the people of New York to encourage him to deny the request made by GHI and HIP. They ask people to write letters and make phone calls to the Superintendents office and to also express their dissent at the demonstration to be held outside Eric Dinallo’s office on May 9th.

The Coalition Against Privatization was created to combat the proposed privatization of GHI and HIP. Organizations with members currently involved in the Coalition include: Independent Community of Educators (UFT), Teachers for a Just Contract (UFT), TWU rank and file members, the Private Health Insurance Must Go! Coalition, Socialist Party USA (NYC Local), and Students for a Democratic Society.
