Demonstrators, organized by a coalition of groups led by International Answer, gathered on 7th Avenue today to protest the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza.

The demonstration, which fell far short of the 15,000 people Answer announced from the speakers platform, was nevertheless one of the largest Palestinian Solidarity events in recent NYC history. Close to 2,000 people lined the eastern half of 7th Avenue from 42nd Street all the way down to 37th street.

It was a lively and diverse crowd, and protesters held placards representing positions from apolitical and humanitarian concern for the children of Gaza all the way to revolutionary socialism.

There was a small counterdemonstration on the west side of 7th Avenue numbering about 20 people and a heavy, though not unusually heavy police presence.
