The smelters have a combined capacity of 194,000 metric tons of aluminum per year and directly employ about 1,000 workers. The shut-down process will begin immediately, with completion expected in the second half of December bringing Alcoa’s global smelter closures to 24% of their capacity over the last 12 months.
