Charter School Myths Debunked

“There is,” Schall argued emphatically, “nothing universal about charter schools.”

The presentation addressed a series of myths that had been circulated about charter schools. Schall described charter schools as serving to undermining the public schools mission of educating all students, siphon-off tax funds and to bust the teacher’s union.

Some debunking took place this weekend as Socialist Party of New York City chair Kristin Schall presented her thoughts on what she termed the “charter school myth” during a meeting on the topic held at the Peace Pentagon this Sunday. Charter schools are a hot topic in New York City these days as the Federal government’s promise of increased funding for education has been made contingent on raising the cap on charter schools. In addition, lobbying groups have unleashed a wave of television and mail ads promoting the benefits of charter schools and blaming the teacher's union for the woes of the educational system. Schall attempted to untangle this mess, arguing that another kind of educational reform is possible.

charter schools are corporate backed attacks on public education

an excellent article on the presentation on what charter schools actually are, instead of what some of the corporate backed advertisements says and emote. They not only deprive resources from public education that is mandated to serve ALL students, they often don't have transparency in regards to finances and while claiming to educate youth to "achieve", often it's not in critical thinking but in passing tests. As for teachers who do not have unionization (at this time), it often means an work environment that doesn't help them to be the best teacher they can be for the children they teach, but instead ones that must teach to the "test" and not offer more to children who often need much more and would benefit from the expertise and experience of the teachers.

This is yet another attempt for white middle class 'activists' to tell us where we can send our children to school. They're frightened of the thought of black and brown parent autonomy to leave schools that have been awful since I was a kid. The Board of Ed, with their lackeys in the teachers and principals union, has had decades to ruin the lives of our children. They've failed and we want our children to learn!

Despite the supposed 'socialist' nature of these groups, they want the exact same thing as the UFT-- a monopoly on control of the schools. You people shut down community control in Brownsville-Ocean Hill in the 60s and now you're stopping parents from rescuing their kids from the same exact schools that are failing. Shame on you, you'd never send your own children to the schools ours have to go to.
