A United Rally for Immigrant Rights and Elvira Arellano in Los Angeles August 25

Echo Park Community Coalition(EPCC) | Despite the hot and humid weather and a lethargic start because of the sound system , thousands of immigrants, advocates and anti-war protestors brought out a united front for Elvira Arellano and immigrant rights.

The protestors marched down the Olympic/Broadway road, snaked through 2nd street and Los Angeles street and ended at the intersection of Temple and Los Angeles Streets to protest the unjust deportation of Elvira Arellano and for full rights for all immigrants.

The protestors massed early at the Olympic intersection as early as 10:00 AM and started late around 12;45 PM.

The 4,000 to 5,000 strong march/rally was led by “We Are All Elvira and Saulito Coalition” led by the April 7 Coalition composed of Hermanidad Mexicana Nacional and the Latino Movement USA led by Juan Jose Gutierrez, Raul Murillo, Angelina Corona and the ANSWER-LA: the March 25 Coalition led by Javier Rodriguez; CHIRLA led by Angelica Salas and the CARACEN.

ILIPINO VETERANS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS CONDEMN HARRASMENT OF US-BASED GABRIELA

Justice for the Filipino American Veterans | Different Filipino World War II veterans and community organizations in Los Angeles today condemned the harassment perpetrated by the Philippine authorities against GABRIELA Network (GABNet) USA National Chairperson Dr. Annalisa Enrile.

Dr. Enrile was barred from boarding her return flight to the United States. This act of harassment occurred on the culminating day of the 10th bi-annual Women’s International Solidarity Affair in the Philippines, a conference that draws hundreds of women from all over the globe and covers issues such as sex trafficking and other international human right violations.

The Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV), the Society of Guerillas and Scouts Inc (SGSI) and other community organizations like the Echo Park Community Coalition (EPCC), Philippine Peasant Support Network (Pesante)-USA and other groups were outraged by the violations of Dr. Enrile’s rights.

Commander Peping Baclig and Jack Vergara, both veterans and community leaders were appalled that the Philippine government will subject one of the rare doctorate degree holders in the Filipino community in the Untied States to such inquisition. The August 4-5 activities will be capped by a 5-kilometer run on Sunday Aug.5 More than 300 runners and walkers will participate on the event.

The Justice for FIlipino American Veterans( JFAV) and the remaining Filipino World War II veterans in California will mark the 66th anniversary of the 1941Military Order of President Franklin D.Roosevelt drafting Philippine Commonwealth soldiers into U.S. armed service. On July 26, 1941, Roosevelt ordered the formation of the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) placing all Filipino forces under the U.S Command. This is in preparation for World War II. retired general Douglas Macarthur was designated as the field marshal placing the 120,000 Philippine Army, Constabulary, navy and aircorps and all Filipino ROTC reserve units under US Command.
