We just wanted to let everyone know about a new virtual space for creativity, discussion, humor, good music, and spontaneous monster insurrection. Right now we're just getting started, but here's our collective ideas about what we hope to see:
The S.O.A.P. Box Radio Collective is an alternative media project, collectively run, that seeks to bridge the chasm between listener and broadcaster, passivity and activism. We are a collective first and a radio station second. We will use radio as a medium for creation and dialogue. In addition to broadcasting music of all genres, the radio station will feature readings from local artists and individuals, social and political discussion, and engaging original shows. In opposition to the constant scripting of our lives, we seek to create a space for experimentation, joy and inquiry. We also strive to become a communication medium for progressive student groups at Columbia University and the surrounding community.
In a world where the media is too frequently indifferent to the humanity it claims to represent and serve, corporate sponsorship veiled behind false objectivity, S.O.A.P. Box Radio will represent nothing but itself, independent and un-embedded. Free from bureaucracy, our goal is to create and share in accordance with our mutual desires. This project developed and continues to grow organically, centered around straight chillen’.
S.O.A.P. Box Radio runs on the open-source platform of P2P-Radio. This Java based application turns every listener into a broadcaster, allowing the station to truly be collective and decentralized.
