First notes on the Critical Mass

By NYC Indymedia

#media_16373;right# The first wave of posts on tonight's Critical Mass have come in. The ride was New York's largest critical mass, with well over 5,000 bikes.

Gathering at Union Square in the middle of Manhattan at 7 p.m. and departing at 7:30, oil-free transportation stretched across all horizons around Union Square. First pedaling south down Broadway and then rerouting north on Madison and Sixth avenues, Critical Mass consisted of a 45 block long brigade of cyclists, skaters and pedestrians. The ride lasted about 2 hours, performed its traditional occupation of Times Square and rode past Madison Square Garden (MSG), site of the RNC.

Approximately 800 Critical Massers ended up at St. Mark's church in lower Manhattan, sanctuary for the protest and home to much of the organizing for the counter RNC mobilizing. Upon arriving at the church, the Critical Mass riders hoisted their bikes into the air, waving them overhead as they unleashed a long unified victory cry.

The celebratory mood at St. Mark's lasted only fifteen minutes though before police moved and began arresting participants. Critical Mass riders elsewhere were caught and arrested by New York City Police along the way. Several riders were taken down after passing MSG, dozens more were arrested at the Lincoln Tunnel.

Video of the evening being processed by the Indymedia Center right now shows the regrettably predictable violent nature of the arrests. Caught on tape are images of protesters being thrown off their bicycles, heads beaten into the asphalt, then cuffed with plastic flexi-cuffs. Pedestrians milling about also unfortunately fell victim to the cops, getting pulled off the street and arrested too. The latest reports put the total amount of arrested riders and bystanders at 250 people.

great coverage! thank you nyc-imc - the site seems to be working better than ever.

Critical Mass riders should file a class action lawsuit against police for interfering with their freedom of movement and association, interfering with their use of public roadways, numerous assaults, harassment, etc etc. i'm not a lawyer but i hear that the cops have done this crap before and didn't get away with it (2000 DNC in LA for example).

cops should cut the crap, stop wasting resources and go on strike against their masters instead of fighting their stupid losing battle for them.

The guy riding at the very front, the very first guy, was a real dick. He was screaming, really aggressively, "FUCK BUSH" at people on the sidewalk. It set a pretty obnoxious tone for the event.

just a note of clarification: the jubilation at st. marks definitely lasted longer than 15 minutes. granted, i was one of the first ones who got there, and i wasnt watching the time, but i definitely wandered around through the crowds and enjoyed myself for at least 30 or 40 minutes before the cops even showed up. then, it was probably another fifteen minutes before i saw (not to say that there werent others that i missed) the first arrest. after that though, it didnt look too pretty....
keep it up nyc! the world is depending on us.

This is a shout of solidarity to all those involved in the actions against the RNC.
We had a Critical Mass in Dublin, our capital yesterday and tomorrow we are holding a large Anti-Bush demo.
Keep up the fight people! Those cops seem pretty unforgiving over there...
Every single one of you has the support of the activist community here in Ireland.

I was one of the CM riders-in-solidarity in Dublin. A former New Yorker, now a Dubliner, I plan to protest against the war and Bush at the American Embassy on Sunday. "The People, United, Will Never Be Defeated!!!!" More bikes, less Bush!!!

This should end up costing the city a bit. The last mass arrest at a critical mass was the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles 2000. There were about 250 riders and 71 were arrested.

Last year the City and County both settled for these illegal arrests which included strip searches of the women. It cost the City and County about $2million and has supposedly led to minor "reforms" such as the placing of prominent signs in County jails informing the sherrif's deputies that they can't strip search people for no reason.

Well done to all that took part in Critical Mass, now sue the criminals!

Slimjim345's ignorance, close-mindedness and bad spelling are testimony to the sorry state of the educational system in the "greatest richest country in the history of the world."

For someone who doesn't care, he sure wasted a lot of words.

Friday morning across from Standard Screen on Varick is a small dinner that had about 5 cops waiting for some food. My ears perked when one said..yeah we're all going to the Critical Mass Bike ride thing tonight...I thought nothing of it. There's always a handfull of cops escorting us on Vespas...it's obvious now the arrests were planned to step on the necks of activists. Be just a little macho and let onlookers know who runs this city before the big demonstrations Sunday.

Don't be discouraged.

Let's not lose focus here. We must maintain solidarity. Like I said, we had our own Critical Mass in Dublin, our capital. Why do you Americans keep torturing us with Bush? We support you nonetheless. Every single one of you has the support of the activist community because "all that rage built up inside of me, my fist up your ass in the land of hypocrisy!"

Cheers. God save the Queen.

c.s.

hopefully those who were in the front line capturing the police misconduct have notified the NLG abouth the footage. why bother sharing the footage w/ legal? It helps those charged with a crime to fight it in court, gives the city more pressure to stop being so damn aggressive and violent. Previous video footage from IMC'stas has been used successfully against cops in civil suits by protesters who were severily injured for no freaking reason by the NYPD.
If you don't believe me just call legal and ask them. You can do this annonymously, too.

The police seemed very calm and reasonable just because they knew they would be making mass arrests once we got to 35th. They knew we couldn't help but ride down to times square, so they sat there waiting. Once we were there, they were making profiled arrests. anyone have any idea what the bassis of this profiling was? All I know is they reached past two other cyclests to grab me.
