Apparently we have discovered some NIMBYS in NYC. I find the message inspiring. It will be a subtle an constant reminder at least through the day. This is exactly the point of direct action. The people who encounter any of these fountains today will have to wonder why they are red -- thinking about the state of affairs in your community and beyond due to the current administration is a GOOD THING. I feel this action was brilliant!!!!

As of 2:30 pm, there were four cops standing around the Washington Square Park fountain (one lieutenant, two patrol cops, and one park police) keeping busy making sure that no one got near the fountain. the dye had been drained, leaving a few puddles of red dye. kids, I think it's safe to sit there again. don't the cops have anything better to do?

I love the red fountain idea. What a powerful visual statement. For another strong visual go to Union Square Park and look at the complete list of those who died so far in Iraq. Very powerful and stirring!!!

I think it's a tremendously powerful statement, amazingly unified for a city of this size, and visually arresting. However, to clarify, NYU Student who commented on the police monitoring the fountain: unfortunately they probably do have something better to do but due to the nature of this demonstration, they have to monitor the situation until a hazmat team verifies there's no threat. Given the amout of teams available, that could be some time. Even though everyone *knows* it's not hazardous, and the City can't afford to take the risk.

I was making a mild joke earlier about the fountain, sorry for any misunderstanding. I'm new to this venue and am used to more lighthearted banter among participants.

Truth is, my dog wouldn't know the water was different if she had been there... dogs are color blind. And the whole thing DOES seem like a harmless way to get a message across. You know what's really funny? There's a sign at Washington Square Park asking dog owners to not allow their dogs to play in the fountain. I'm thinking that if he follows the posted rules, his dog will be just fine.

I hate it when someones dog gets their hair/dirt in public fountains (for public enjoyment) and it clogs the filters (have you even cleaned one of these things out? yuk!). At least red 'die', has a cause... your using the fountain as your personal dog bath... well.
To get to the point on danger, I'm sure that the flea and tick shampoo you use on your dog is more dangerous for people in the park than red food coloring.

Nicely done by the fountain people. I went down there to see it for myself around 6PM last night. It had been drained and about three guys were mopping it up, probably about twenty minutes worth of work, hardly a huge inconvenience at all. People were pointing and talking excitedly. It certainly made an impression upon some people.

Independent journalists have no senses of humour. Keep fighting the good fight though.

I saw bloody Bethesda fountain in Central Park. Very stiking. Talked to Dept. of Envirmental Protection worker who explained that they were waiting to see test results of the red substance before draining the fountain - to make sure it wasn't harmful. He was concerned that it would be a long tought job to clean up. Not long after they had drained the fountain and red stuff was easily rinsed away.
