I see no need to weep for her in this case. Yes, she has defended people in need of defense. But the evidence does suggest she crossed the line, and we should applaud the application of the law.

I do think there were disturbing aspects to the way the prosecution proceeded, such as the taping of attourney/client meetings. But just because she supports the left wing, doesn't mean the left wing need support her.

The issue, it seems to me, is the eroding of constitutional law. The people who suggested that Stewart would be executed in Iraq or Egypt are completely missing the point. This is the United States. This is supposed to be a place where everyone has a fair trial without the intervention of the government bugging, pressuring, and propagandizing trials to suit the current administration's political agenda. The Stewart trial was initiated by a speech by Ashcroft in the Justice Department and it's just been concluded with another speech by triumphant speech by AG Gonzales. These are show trials pure and simple. They are meant to cast a chill over all dissident legal work in this country.

I'm also not a right-winger, always vote green or indy or sometimes Democrat, ride my bike frequently, cheer and participate in critical-mass, go to protests, hate Bush and the 3 other horsemen of the Apocalypse. BUT, I think Lynne Stewart screwed up and is guilty. However, I don't think she deserves jailtime - maybe to be disbarred and fined, but not jail.
