Well, sometimes my classes go on fieldtrips, and we are more than 20. Do we need permits from the city for that? I don't think we are parading without a permit, but I guess we are. and tour groups. Do tour groups get arrested for parading without a permit? It makes me sad that Ray Kelly is making the voice of New York as 'New York hates bicyclist' cause it ain't true. The truth is, New York hates Ray Kelly. It is nice out and you can't rely on the subways, we need to get more of the city cycling.

I am writing to promote Critical Mass bike ride that meets every last Friday of the Month at Union Square Park in NYC at 7 PM spontaneously.

This is the first time I am promoting this ride like this, and I do so because our democracy is under a Ms Carthyesque attack.


The New York City District Attorney has taken legal action against Time’s Up organizers in an attempt to stop the monthly Critical Mass bicycle rides and limit what the group is allowed to say. On Wednesday an injunction was filed against the group as well as specific individuals . If the injunction is granted by the state court it will be illegal for any of the named individuals, members of Time’s Up, or "all those acting in concert with" them to promote Critical Mass. Lawyers for the group plan to file a response asking that the city’s request for an injunction be denied.

I am a member of Times Up and i will promote this ride for as long as the government seeks to make it illegal to do so.


Our city administration is using counter terrorism monies to spy in the bike ride and unsuspecting apartment lovers with infrared helicopter cameras as seen on CBS. We have real crime in NYC that could be better addressed.

Write to your council member to demand hearings on this issue.

i don't honestly think that they think they can win this one. rather, this is more of an attempt to 'criminalize' the ride

see from their point of view, this is aligned with the counter-rnc protests of the summer (which is pure bs -- remember they didn't target cm's till rnc) and as such they are using this threat to drive a wedge of somekind of win on the books in city politics, that would justify, they hope, the argument, that all the lawsuits they are now facing for illegal imprisonment in illegal conditions can be met with some kind of city gov't blow off. In other words, they are using this, in part to create a fortress against what is anticipated to be very possibly a monster, big, big, big lawsuit lose for the city on the rnc arrest lawsuits. From their point of view, if they can make this (rnc-protest resonant) (anarcho-flavored) recurring -- and popular -- thing illegal, then they bolster the position that all those people who got arrested really only have a weak case, and don't deserve some kind of massive pay out.

Repression and discredit. Erase history.

They are probably hoping for a kind of state-authorized support for shutting down any ride over 20 people, whether there are leaders or not.

like in putting on the books, that rides of more then 20 people are illegal.

i wonder if there are any bicycle organizations out there -- of an earthy, crunchy, sporty, mainstream variety -- who would dare to raise a stink. I bet some of those bikers are people with some bucks and influence -- it would be good if they took a stand on this.. but then liberal and/or a-political types are often a bit asleep at the wheel, lest it be some kind of charity or something safe and comfy that doesn't require going out on any kind of limb (i know i know they are out on a limb surviving and flourishing in this dog-eat-dog world! i know)...

perhaps the next event should be geared to put this in the context of how this kind of shutting down is a threat to civil liberties of all bicycle riders!!

what if specifically, bike racing clubs, and mountain bike people club/network people were invited, cajoled, encouraged to come down!! and the media connected with these joints was brought into the loop. How can the absurdity of this threat be brought out, and how can the more earthy crunchy types (rather then anarcho) people be brought into the public opinion barometer on this?!

it needs to get mainstreamized, but in a particular way...

this needs to be raised to a kind of humanistic, civil rights level.

rather then staying in the ghetto of anarchist, counter-rnc located, political spill-over (as the police state is liking to waste tax-payers time and money playing it off as).

i look forward to seeing everyone on the streets tomorrow! we've been doing this for ten years and there's no way in hell ray kelly is going to stop us now. despite the fear-mongering, countless illegal arrests and surveillance that happened on his watch, he couldn't stop us last year when we created the largest counter-convention protests ever, and he's not going to stop this long-standing and communitarian new york past-time either.

to the streets y'all! do it with grins, with pumped fists and with friends. come on foot. come by bike. let's turn this into an unforgettable spectacle!

Every weekday, I see an event known as the evening commute clog the city with cars. Tens of thousands descend upon the bridges and tunnels, clogging roads, and impeding emergency vehicles. Why are these people not arrested? NYPD, show me their permits!

Organize a few people to flyer for the evening commute in NYC, tell them to converge on bridges and tunnels between 5 and 6 pm. Declare victory for "car mass" as the traffic jam ensues, and demand that the NYPD require permits for this daily event. Then, all you need do it apply the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment to CM:

I really hate these IMC mash up pieces were a bunch of posts to the newswire are combined into something confusing on the Center column. In what seem like an effort to appear "objective" IMC will even include people’s comments. Back in December, when Casa Del Sol was evicted somebody posted a critical comment that ended up in the center column and was later retracted as by the author. In the future I suggest that the IMC either move the best story to the center column or write their own.
