Friday Night's Critical Mass Bike Ride Sparks Controversy
By imcista
Friday night’s monthly Critical Mass bike ride drew upwards of a thousand riders who rode directly from Union Square to a community garden in the South Bronx. The unusually direct route has sparked debate among IMC readers. Says one, “Why then, did Critical Mass turn from it's usual disruptive and circuitous nature to a direct ride to the South Bronx to have a party at/"save" some community gardens?… Were we welcomed by the South Bronx community? With eggs, insults, and eventually bottles, yes. Apparently, there was not enough outreach to the neighborhood to let them know that 1,000+ (mostly) white cyclists were coming to one of the most segregated neighborhoods in NYC… In the end, we were harrassing and being harrassed. In the words of one frustrated resident, "Not long ago, white people couldn't even come to this neighborhood, and now look - all these cops, this rambunctiousness is because of them." However, another reader writes, “I did not see any opposition from the locals compared to the grumbles of people on the street throughout Manhattan, as is with usual rides. And I was glad that the police presence was limited only to one intersection. Not only that, but after an hour and a quarter, nearly everybody was gone anyway. Is there anything WRONG with taking people where they never went before? To hold a party in a garden in order to help save it?” || Critical Mass || Past coverage in The Indypendent || Critical Mass Photos
