When i walked into my neighborhood deli this morning, rather than the food i first noticed the paper with the huge title "ANARCHY THREAT TO CITY". Now ive been to this site everyday for past few months, and i read all the articles, and i go to other sites like www.rncnotwelcome.org and i couldnt believe how rediculous the Daily News article was. it was almost like reading a COMIC BOOK. TOTALLY B.S.

So it begins! I hope that we don't lose this opportunity to truly understand and accept that the media is completely full of shit.

I have noticed that the only time the media demonizes white people is when they have an alternative political ideology to offer. I hope my white allies can take this as a lesson to learn that this same process of misinformation, criminalization (before a crime has even occured- so everyone is still innocent) and demonization is used all the time against people of color, in my experience, particularly Black people, Latinos, and of course Arabs, and more particularly against Palestinians - people whose media image has NOTHING to do with the reality.

Reactionaries, please don't get all bent out of shape about my post. I believe that the problem of racism and ignorance of cultures other than our own is a KEY problem in movement building, here in NY and around the country. And we all do it. I hope we can all begin to make the connections and re-think Everything we've been told. The lies that Bush told about Iraq are the same lies the government/media have been telling/or told about every "intervention" you or I could remember.

So next time you're walking down the street and a Black man is coming your way, don't let the media make you run, or look away , or speed your step. And the next time you hear Gaza Strip, forget whatever f@#cked up image you have in your head about masses of blood thirsty extremists and remember there are children trying to survive their childhoods there, and mothers kissing them good night before they go to sleep under the a sky filled with deadly warplanes.

unfortunately all three local news networks ran the story unchallenged last night. the RNC Not Welcome Clearinghouse Media Working Group will be issuing a press release. I mean, Christ, you can find ANYTHING on the web. There's stuff about vigilante group coming to beat us silly, but you don't see that making the news.

Its nice to see that the marble post (which appeared several months ago) finally got some play.

Bet NYPD was tracking large quantity marble purchases nationwide from that time on. Maybe they even checked purchases of marbles in Canada or Mexico-- or monitored cross border marble shipments. Wonder which garage or basement serve as stores/repositories?

Better watch out for hyposquirts filled with noxious substances as well. And don't forget equines and canines don't react too well to cayenne peppers spread around the face or nose.

EVERYONE needs to come out...I challenge all pastors of local assemblies, priests, bishops, ministers, rabbis, and others in religious hierchy to lead by example and come out and support JUSTICE, PEACE, PROSPERITY, and LOVE...isnt that the basis of all of our faiths anyway???

it's about time we stop pandering to media about communicating our message. in post-seattle era of protest, the corporate media has consistently misrepresented our messages, falsely reported incidents, sided with police reports, etc. worse, editorials and discussions from corporate media have consistently dismissed our ideas with condescension.

as should be obvious by now, the corporate media should be held accountable for not challenging the constant lies and threats to our civil liberties since 9/11. what's the point of a free press if it acts like the state's public relations office?

it should be obvious by now that the corporate media is as much of an enemy as the bush administration, for the simple reason that they answer to the same capitalist logic.

that said, i'd love to see corporate media get the treatment they deserve during the convention.

The steps public officials and capitalists will take to stifle dissent are not new: they've been practiced and refined for over 70 years. In 1934, the Mohawk Valley Formula was devised in order to break a popular strike. Astute observers will recognize the same tactics employed today by the RNC.

James Rand and the Mohawk Valley Formula

When the IAM signed its 1934 contract with Remington Rand, union members were jubilant. But, as noted, the joy proved to be premature. Virtually from the day the contract was signed company president James Rand frustrated union efforts to enforce it. Plant managers were instructed to ignore complaints about contract violations and foremen were told not to discuss grievances with union representatives. In the resulting climate of suspicion and distrust, Remington Rand workers began to hear disturbing rumors. According to the grapevine the company intended to transfer many existing operations to a new central facility in Elmira, New York.

Union representatives, seeking a conference to clear the air, were rebuffed. Digging around for information the Grand Lodge learned that a so-called "industrial committee" in Elmira had purchased a defunct Willys-Morrow auto plant and offered it to Remington Rand free of charge. Probing deeper the union found that a dummy corporation, wholly owned by Remington Rand, was screening union attitudes of job applicants.

Rumor ran wild and uncertainty reigned in Remington Rand plants. IAM representatives were routinely lied to and given the runaround by plant managers. with the old contract about to expire the company refused to even discuss a new agreement. In desperation, a strike vote was taken in a number of plants. More than 75% of the returned ballots were marked "Strike." IAM locals, along with other unions, asked for federal mediation. But Rand, determined to force the issue, did so by firing the presidents of the federal unions in Tonawanda and Syracuse along with the president and fifteen other members and officers of the IAM lodge in Syracuse. With peaceful settlement impossible 6,500 Remington Rand employees walked off their jobs in late May. Picket lines were set up in Syracuse, Tonawanda and Ilion, New York, Norwood and Marietta, Ohio and Middletown, Connecticut.

The strike became one of the most savage, lengthy and memorable in the annals of the American labor movement. Having failed to break the earlier strike in 1934, Rand was now more determined than ever to break the spirit of unionism in his work force once and for all.

The company's first major attack came at Ilion where a sizable contingent of thugs and plug-uglies from professional strikebreaking agencies were imported to back up 300 specially sworn sheriff's deputies. The NLRB later reported:

With such tactics Rand was able to get the Ilion plant back into partial operation by the end of the first month. He applied the same tactics at other struck plants. The company got judges to limit picketing, landlords to raise rents and police to arrest pickets on most flimsy charges. In Syracuse, for example, two girls were sentenced to thirty days for waving a rubber rat at scabs going through their picket line. In Elmira the mayor refused to permit circulation of the national labor newspaper, Labor, while in Syracuse the mayor assured the company unlimited police protection.

At the Middletown, Ohio plant police arrested peaceful pickets and judges hit them with long prison sentences. Every week the pressure increased. Rand devised diabolic strategies to demoralize and divide the workers. "For Sale" signs appeared in front of the factories. "Citizens committees" were formed. Workers and their wives were visited in their homes and urged to join highly publicized "back-to-work" campaigns. The company also leaned heavily on locally elected officials. On one occasion the mayor of Ilion met secretly with the strikers and tearfully confessed that he was being forced into actions he did not want to take. Although he was one of the wealthiest men in town the mayor had been warned by a citizens' committee that included his banker that if he defied the company he would be ruined and run out of town "with nothing left but his hat, coat and pants." Citizens committees visited merchants and warned them not to help or give credit to strikers.

At Tonawanda, Rand planted a rumor that the strikers were deserting and most were ready to go back to work. The National Metal Trades Association sent in eighty-five professional thugs to play the part of the alleged deserters. They arrived at the plant gate armed to the teeth with clubs and bricks and, as Rand hoped, a free-for-all broke out. He stood on the sidelines snapping pictures of the fighting and violence. The next day, after the thugs had been slipped quietly out of town, the newspapers printed Rand's pictures to show how picketing labor goons had attacked honest working men who wanted only to return to their jobs.

When Rand finally gathered enough scabs to reopen the Ilion plant on June 12, he gloated about his new formula for strikebreaking. At a victory celebration he trumpeted that "two million business men have been looking for a formula like this." and indeed the next day representatives of the NAM arrived in Ilion to study Rand's union-busting success. The next issue of the NAM's Labor Relations Bulletin immortalized the "Mohawk Valley Formula" as a classic blueprint for union busting. Neither Rand nor the NAM had taken the Wagner Act into account. When the NLRB handed down its decision in April, 1937, eleven months after the strike began, 4,000 of the original 6,500 were still on the picket lines.

In a monumental 120-page decision the Board found Rand had arrogantly place himself above the law, subjecting 6,500 workers and their families to the miseries of a prolonged strike, the people of six communities to extreme economic hardship, turning neighborhoods into warring camps and unleashing unreasoning hatreds. The NLRB ordered reinstatement with back pay of the union workers discharged prior to the strike, reemployment of the 4,000 workers still on strike, disestablishment of all company unions and recognition of bona fide unions in the six affected plants as well as in the new Elmira plant. Rand fought the order all the way to the Supreme Court but was eventually forced to recognize the union and make restitution to the workers.

The Mohawk Valley Formula

First: When a strike is threatened, label the union leaders as "agitators" to discredit them with the public and their own followers. Conduct balloting under the foremen to ascertain the strength of the union and to make possible misrepresentation of the strikers as a small minority. Exert economic pressure through threats to move the plant, align bankers, real estate owners and businessmen into a "Citizens' Committee."

Second: Raise high the banner of "law and order", thereby causing the community to mass legal and police weapons against imagined violence and to forget that employees have equal right with others in the community.

Third: Call a "mass meeting" to coordinate public sentiment against the strike and strengthen the Citizens' Committee.

Fourth: Form a large police force to intimidate the strikers and exert a psychological effect. Utilize local police, state police, vigilantes and special deputies chosen, if possible, from other neighborhoods.

Fifth: Convince the strikers their cause is hopeless with a "back-to-work" movement by a puppet association of so-called "loyal employees" secretly organized by the employer.

Sixth: When enough applications are on hand, set a date for opening the plant by having such opening requested by the puppet "back-to-work" association.

Seventh: Stage the "opening" theatrically by throwing open the gates and having the employees march in a mass protected by squads of armed police so as to dramatize and exaggerate the opening and heighten the demoralizing effect.

Eighth: Demoralize the strikers with a continuing show of force. If necessary turn the locality into a warlike camp and barricade it from the outside world.

Ninth: Close the publicity barrage on the theme that the plant is in full operation and the strikers are merely a minority attempting to interfere with the "right to work". With this, the campaign is over--the employer has broken the strike.

can i just say one thing? the corporate news media is not monolithic. the corporations, producers, publishers, etc. are generally all bad, but there is a difference between different newspapers and stations, and a lot of reporters actually have real integrity. i would be willing to bet a minority, but a lot of them. im all down with going after the extremist media, but there is also a moderate corporate media which we can use.

The authorities, including their mouthpieces in the media, are playing the age-old game of "divide and conquer." They claim that there is a movement mostly full of "good" protesters whose efforts are being undermined by the existence of "bad" protesters who break off from permitted marches and damage property, block streets, defend themselves against police assault or do anything else deemed unacceptable.

As we prepare for the battle in the streets at the RNC we must ask ourselves: Is there such a thing as a bad protester?

Who are these people trying to tell us our actions are good or bad? Aren't they the very same authorities and institutions that we are protesting? Aren't they the ones who have murdered hundreds of thousands of Iraqis since 1991? Aren't they the ones who have detained 1000's of Arab, Muslim, and South Asian immigrants in the US? Aren't they the ones who have tortured detainees and prisoners from Iraq to Afghanistan to Guantanamo Bay? Aren't the police who are firing rubber bullets at us, taking our pictures, and trying to disrupt our meetings the same ones who killed more than 2,000 mostly Black and Latino men and women in the 1990's? HOW DARE THESE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINALS TELL US THAT WE'RE THE ONES GOING TO FAR?

In massive protests in the last few years, in Washington, DC, Seattle, Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Miami local and federal police forces have repressed and assaulted protesters and even random bystanders and the media.

Many people - particularly the determined youth who have taken the frontlines - have been trampled by horses, shot at and tear-gassed, intentionally struck by police vehicles, dragged through the streets, detained, harrassed and charged with crimes for daring to stand up against America's tidal wave of war and repression unleashed on the world.

Protesters never know what to expect when planning a major protest - police infiltration, denial of permits, surveillance, and outright brutality from the police. The idea of "bad" protesters is arbitrary and often changes. It's all up to the cops.

If the politicians and police had their way, the entire country would be a "no protest zone" so that they could continue their crimes unhindered by the people.

Many activists and protesters are still figuring out what future they think is right - all are united by what they know is wrong. We are strong and bold in our beautiful diversity. Look at the anti-war protests and rallies and you'll find as many reasons people have come out for it as there are people. You will find veterans who remember the horrors of Vietnam and the Gulf War, youth who see no difference between themselves and young people living in Afghanistann or Iraq, and people who are fed up with the lies constantly coming from Bush & Co.

Anyone and everyone who refuses to go along with the agenda of unending war and repression is doing a "good" thing.

Young people will express their disgust with the world they've inherited in all kinds of ways. Whatever ways people choose to express their opposition, we must cherish that resistance, and amplify every act!

But shouldn't we resist in a way that's consistent with the world we live in? I think it's abhorrent that police use animals to trample people, but that doesn't mean that we should in turn also make the animals suffer. Let's not glorify resistance for resistance's sake....no, I don't want to be judged by the state and have it tell me what's right and what's wrong. I have my own compass and I feel that it's not good to hurt people or animals except in direct self-defense.
