ACT UP protesters, arrested early Thursday morning, were released early Friday morning with reduced charges. Bail ($200) was requested for one protester, but judge refused to impose it. DA told judge that it would be "WEF Protest Policy" to offer time served in exchange for "guilty" pleas. In 2001, the City was embarassed by the discovery of a Giuliani policy that ordered police to jail protesters for 24 hours rather than simply summonsing them. The City rescinded that policy in the face of three separate lawsuits. In these ACT UP arrests, the DA told the court that special policies had been set for WEF protesters. Apparently the City hasn't learned anything about the law -- or else it just doesn't care.
