I was amazed to see that, on the map, DoJ sponsors development of "less-than-lethal" weapons technology, but there it is. On the DoJ's page for it, it says the technology gives "public safety officers effective alternatives to lethal force." lol!

-this map is fantastic, but i would like to see (possibly in the future) an expansion of the geographic area.
-For example, I think of the expansive nuclear tests the US conducted in the South Pacific at Bikini Atoll and other islands in the 50's, and how they moved entire populations to accomodate room for their tests.
-If you're thinking of a worldwide geographic area, you could point out the locations where US economic interests have contributed to all kinds of human rights and environmental abuses, such as Shell Oil Company's involvement in Nigerian politics, Exxon's numerous oil spills, etc.
-this would obviously be a whole other map though.

Well, after just looking at this thing for a few minutes I spotted some errors. There is only one Minot AFB, it's in North Dakota. The map has another Minot AFB, but it's in Cheyenne, WY. That one should be F.E. Warren AFB. Also, in the text block for NORAD in Colorado it says that one of its facilities is Cheyenne Mountain, located in Wyoming. Cheyenne Mountain is not in Wyoming, it's in Colorado, near Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

This map is fantastic! I can't imagine the work that went into creating such a thing (a few mistakes aside). This is a major tool for organizing and raising people's awareness. Indymedia strikes again! Keep up the great work.

shipping dose'nt cost that much, its pritty $$$$ for some papper, i think it should be free so others like me can copie it and give it out. I'm sure people will still buy a lot of them, but maybe even more if you lower the price a little. I do love the map idea and hope it goes well.

As a extremely low-paid community organizer trying to live in NYC, I can certainly sympathize with those who worry about spending the cash on something like this. But as someone who also helped (a very little bit) on the map itself, I'd just like to add that the sale of this map is an educational tool, an outreach tool, and also a fundraiser for the Indypendent, the print project at NY-IMC, which has faced consistent and continuous cash flow problems. For instance, it costs over $1000 every time we print the paper, and its at least and extra couple hundred to mail the paper to our subscribers. For an aLL-volunteer organization, this is a lot of money.

For instance, when you pledge $40 to WBAI, you get, what, a t-shirt probably worth $10-15 on the market that probably cost a couple cents to make. Obviously, part of your money is going to support the media outlet itself. We hope that people will see their map purchase, at least partly, in this light.

Plus, it looks damn cool.

I work at the student union @ murdoch uni in west australian. We have an autonomous student newspaper called 'metior' and are doing a special on the us/australian war of terror. As the US are setting up new base 10k from our uni , we need to tell people precicely what our 'ally' is up to. Basically telling people why its a terror war for oil.
Its a free newspaper and patently leftie.

Would you guys object if we reprinted it so students can see just what the use is doing.

Hey folks! Glad everyone like's what they see in the map. A number of NYC IMC people (not me) labored long and hard on this map. A couple words of context. The map first appeared as a centerfold spread in the Nov. issue of The Indypendent, NYC IMC's newspaper. Quite a few readers got back to us asking where they could get a copy, and how they could help support more media like this. In response, we've produced a glossy, poster-sized version of the map with expanded content and graphics.

We're working hard to get the word out about this map because we believe its an organizing tool against the war. The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Research Facility does NOT make depleted Uranium armor for M1-A1 Abrams Tanks. It has not produced anything for the DOD since the early 90s when it trained Naval nuclear submarine technicians. Its breader reactors generate isotopes for medical analysis on an extremly small scale, and its multiple laboratories support nuclear waste reduction and stabilization research as well as basic environmental research. It is a temporary storage facility for low and medium level waste being stabilized prior to shipment to permanant storage in NM.

Wow, Andre. It intersting that you preach for peace while being a totally confrontational person. I will try to put that aside as I reply to your comment. Firstly about terrorism and the definition. I was refering to the the FBI dictionary definition of terrorism (which is correct by the way). I also sense a bit of resentment towards the US (are you not from the US?), why is that. Ask yourself if you really hate the US due to its policy, or maybe its because you have a misperception of those living in it. When I lived in Spain I found that many people did not like the US not becuase of its foriegn policy (because Spain's foriegn policy is very similar to that of the US) but because they think that we are arrogant assholes. I personally think its arrogant steryotype an entire nation like that, kinda like steryotyping an entire race.

I think I can speak a little to the point of defence jobs.

I used to work in defence research (Not in US). Good money for sure, but at some point one needs to ask one self "Can I live with the monster of my creation?"

For me, it came down to the old existentialist point of "You still have a choice".

And I made my choice, I refused to work defence anymore because I could not live with my own work contributing to the extinguishing of my fellow humans lives.

Jobs are one thing, but lets get real, we live in blessed countries, where if we have a brain in our head we can find some work, even if its flipping burgers and if we dont we can probably still get by.

But the young Iraqi conscript doesnt have that choice. He is ripped from his family, given a gun and made to fight an unwinnable war. He might just die real soon now, and his wife and his children will have no father. He doesnt have that opportinity to "opt out".

Thus when YOU or I make that decision to opt out of the war machine, we help HIM opt out too. Perhaps out of Sadams nutty military machine, but out of death and fear.

The US only got involved in WW11 after Pearl Harbour prior to that they were in full support of Hitler, Mussolini & Franco's regimes with full economic and diplomatic ties. Jim, you know, there are some people who critize the government because they want to see if live up to the ideals it purports to uphold. A basic reading of history let's us know that the U.S. government is not infallible and has, in fact, perpetrated a variety of actions that dishonor the ideals of freedom and liberty for all. This has gone on for a long time. Check out Guatemala in 1954 where popularly elected Pres. Arbenz asked United Fruit, the country's largest landowner, to pay taxes on the assessed value of their land. The U.S. initiated a coup that ejected a democratically elected leader and replaced him with a military junta that then went on to maintain power for 40 years by a systematic application of rural terror that left 200,000 dead. Almost all of the military officers in that junta trained in the U.S. at the School of the Americas, the U.S. army's institute for Latin American counterparts. Now, to me that's a betrayal of the things I love about this country. We should be upholding democratically elected leaders, not subverting them, especially for the interest of one U.S. company, and then training third world thugs how to better oppress their people. You expect evil shit from people like Saddam; a country that claims to be the bastion of freedom can't be acting like this. I don't believe that anyone here 'hates' the US -- just what its government is doing. A nice job for the most part, but the errors undermine it's integrity. People may say "With obvious errors like that, how can we believe the rest is correct?" This makes it unusable. It is far too easy for someone to find flaws and dismiss it altogether. Please correct the errors ASAP so that it is usable.

I am a military history major at the United States Military Academy (I began this major before I was accepted to West Point, so please hold accusations that my viewpoint is slanted because of the school I attend). In order to escape some of the more common myths about the American military and especially American intervention, I rely on translations directly from foreign military documents and correspondence with foreign officers.

I am currently trying to gauge the differences in perception between the American protestor and the American soldier.

I am interested in a rational (read-not emotionally tainted) discussion of modern American intervention, motivations and consequences, ranging from Viet Nam to present day. I would also like to discuss how many American officers can doubt their government and still serve their fellow citizens in good faith. I believe protest and patriotism are mutually compatible, even though patriotism and service to the nation are consistently presented in a negative light by some protest organizations. The first post will follow this one.

This should be an informative exchange for both sides. As a future Special Forces officer, I would like to understand opposition to my chosen profession as best I can. I also have a few suggestions that might make your protests more effective / cause military personnel to take you seriously and perhaps modify their behavior, even in combat.

If you can, confine responses to my e-mail OR the posts, I can't keep track of these conversations otherwise.

Terrorism - the use of, or threat of violence for military, economic, social or poitical objectives.

When I speak of intervention, I refer to boots in the mud, or American troops on the ground with the intention of holding that ground for an undetermined length of time, not the cowardly, uncommitted bombing of a nation, like the strikes President Clinton ordered against Sudan and Yugoslavia during his presidency. It is impossible to have a positive effect on any situation without committing the lives of your soldiers to the endeavor.

The United States has a history of military intervention in foreign nations to protect economic interests. Activist groups and political leaders argue this sort of intervention harms the host nation and only produces more problems.

This argument made sense prior to American involvement in Viet Nam, when U.S. forces pursued conventional tactics and neglected a coherent counter-insurgency strategy. The lesson of the Marshall Plan were ignored in favor of assasination, coup attempts, and other counter-productive, clandestine operations that indirectly produced, among other things, the fundamentalist Islamic government in Iran, a host of Latin-American dicatorships (followed by awful political instability), dictatorship followed by radical religious movement in the Phillipines, the political success of the Viet Cong in South Viet Nam and the subsequent military defeat of South Vietnamese forces following American withdrawal from that war, and many other bloody incidents. Most terrorist attacks on our country indirectly result from some kind of intervention.

However, this argument is no longer relevant. The post-Viet Nam reorganization of American foreign policy and armed forces undermines it on several different levels.

This argument revolves around the concept that economically motivated intervention (or, for that matter, any kind of self-serving intervention) always harms host nations. I disagree.

Even when American soldiers are sent into another nation to protect an economic interest (oil, in this case, and in most cases), they are sent to produce the same sort of stability that benifits inhabitants of the host nation. Post-Viet Nam, American intervention results in an increase in the standard of living, and a decrease in local incidents of violence within the host country. The damage done to the civilian population and the host infrastructure pales in comparison with the deprivation and violence that preceded American entry.

Post-Viet Nam examples of success include the American intervention in Bosnia (though this intervention has yet to solve the underlying problem of ethnic hostility, the locals are not offing each other in record numbers), the demilitarization of the Northen Sinai peninsula, the initial invasion of Iraq to protect Saudi Arabia(n oil), the no-fly zone over Kurdish settlements in Northern Iraq, and the invasion and subsequent liberation of Afghanistan. All three interventions can be described as self-serving; we entered Bosnia on behalf of our Eastern European allies, protect Kurdish regions as a source of opposition to Saddam Hussein, and ultimately to protect our sources of oil; we watch the borders between Egypt and Israel, again, to protect sources of oil, and we invaded Afghanistan in retaliation for the attacks on Sept. 11th.

All of these examples involved the use of overwhelming force at the outset of conflict. In some cases, thousands of enemy soldiers, and sometimes many civilians, died.

These deaths have to be put in perspective. No army in modern history has ever waged war with so few civilian casualties, such excellent treatment of enemy soldiers, and such a commitment to rebuilding the devastation of many previous conflicts. Whatever lies you believe the goverment tells, stories of humanitarian efforts by American military forces are true. I have personally spoken to scores of officers, retired and active, who praise the actions their soldiers and superiors took to restore host nations.

America has more money in humanitarian causes than most of our allies combined. America supplies almost half of North Korea's food, for economic interests yes, but those interests and our government's military opposition to the North Korean government don't negate the positive effects of all that food. There would have been famine in Afghanistan if America hadn't shipped tons and tons of religiously acceptable grain staples; America provided the Afghani people more food aid than all other participation nations combined, France and Germany included. The food shortage would have been even worse under taliban leadership.

Look at Russian efforts in Chechnya. That is how the rest of the world fights. Post-Viet Nam, the platoon leaders and company commanders who witnessed massacres like My Lai became Colonels and Generals over a broken army. Led by men like Colin Powell, General Abrams and now-General Shinseki, those platoon leaders and company commanders led the reform of our Army. Again, whatever lies the government tells, our officials are not lying when they talk about an army that will risk the safety of its soldiers for the safety of civilians, even "enemy" civilians. Civilian casualties are probed; officers are tried for the actions of their units and subordinates every time we enter a host nation. Lt. Serifani comes to mind. The air force pilots currently on trial for killing Canadian soldiers with friendly fire also come to mind. The U.S.S Cole didn't have machine guns mounted when it was attacked in Yemen because the commander's first order was "make the smallest possible impression on this port of call." What other country tries its soldiers for crimes comitted in hostile situations, where those soldiers have to make life-and-death on-the-spot decisions?

Even when our leaders have bad intentions; even when they intend to serve the same coporate interests that fund our political system by protecting oil, or cheap labor, modern, post-Viet Nam military intervention is intended to produce political stability, and the surest way to insure stability is to invest time, money, and ultimately lives in securing local government and the local populace with humanitarian aid.

Granted, it would be better if the United States only intervened for altruistic purposes, but self-interested intervention has produced good things as well as bad.

Even when our leaders fail us, the citizens who enforce their decisions ultimately decide what form intervention takes.

I have seen several comments interpreting the map as though it says "All people affiliated with any of the institutions displayed are terrorists."

One person posed this interpretation very directly:
"Does anyone really think that MIT and Carnegie Mellon students are terrorists. Does anyone think that workers at Caterpilar are terrorists."

Please keep separate a) the things that the map actually says, and b) the things you may be projecting onto the map as you read it.

I read it differently:
The spaces in which research is carried out, technologies are developed, and weapons or other equipment are built are an essential aspect of a nation's capacity to wage war. The capacity to wage war is a threat to peace. Therefore, the map describes these infrastructure sites as a threat to peace.

The map is not saying that students at MIT are terrorists, for example. Rather, it says that some of the research carried out at MIT, and some of information taught these, has potential military application. The U.S. government's policy actually confirms this. I read the map as a guide by which people may inform themselves of the level and nature of America's military capacity, which is a topic some people may base voting decisions or other policy-related decisions upon.

With this in mind, I think reading the map with a misleading 'terrorist supporter' label in mind reveals a bias against accountability and public oversight.

As one who works for a company on the map, I am not sure I agree that we are "UTTERLY IGNORANT" of the impact. We do research on a lot of different topics. You chose to ignore that and focus on one person, who has since be fired.

Don't forget that it was someone at RAND that leaked the Pentagon Papers. It was also a RAND report that disputed Pres. Bush's claim that his education policy raised scores in Texas.

My father worked in the defense industry, and I think that rationalization is a better term than ignorance. He knew his company may have worked on things for war, but he was able to rationalize that. I guess you can say I rationalize where I work by looking at all the positive, productive research that comes out of this place.

I admire your writing style and courage to post where so many are opposed to your views.
Having said that, I must say that despite your attempts to explain the benifits of US invasion, I am still left without any definate truths.
You mentioned that:

When in fact, "enemy soldiers" are being held, against UN rights, tortured and confined without trial. Because the US does this outside of their own country they are preaching it to be legal. They justify this type of abuse by saying that since this war was not waged on a country, but on "terrorism" in general, the UN rules do not apply. How is this humane?

You also mentioned that:

Their goal still remains the oil. How can an army be concerned with helping out the country if the only concern is in their commodities?
As for leaving countries in better condition after invasion, just look back on operation desert storm in the nineties. By leaving in this fashion, the US left the door open for an uncountable amount of death and destruction, not to mention a gap in power, allowing religious leaders to take a large part in the government, which caused many of the terrorist attacks we see today not to mention the decline in women's rights.

Understand that I am not questioning the motives of any one army member, but those of the leaders, politicians, and those who blindly support them.

I think part of the point is the way the current US govt does this to all the other nations of the world. While I don't like the events shaping up in N Korea, I get a kick out of how they play the game right back at the US, saying they (NK) must develop nuclear weapons for their own safety as a detterent to countries with pre-emptive strike policies (US).

whoever created the "terrormap" made a goof... Cheyenne Mountain is actually in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is actually where NORAD (North American Air Defense) is located. Cheyenne Mountain is located adjacent to Pike's Peak, just northwest of the main body of Colorado Springs. In addition, there is a highly toxic area located within the Denver city limits called the "Rocky Mountain Arsenal" which has been converted to a nature preserve, however is deemed too toxic for human habitation, i would suggest looking into it, and possibly adding it to the "Terror Map"

I took a look at your map and I dont understand why you have put all the american presidents on it as terrorist. I actally went to this site because my husband and I were looking for a mercenary group that he could join to go help out in Iraq. I agaist war also, but sometimes it takes a real man to end it. My husband was the one our goverment sent over back in 1972 to cambodia to take out the Cambodia presentidency. After that we (the US) put in a better president under every ones nose and that ended the Viet Nam conflict. But Nixon denied it all and made it looked as if was all done by a coo.
