I was one of the 30 or so people arrested on 8th avenue and west 39th street. We, about 4-500 of us, had marched up and down 8th avenue through times square twice, about 10 blocks each way and then we marched into a manmade "dead end" on 40th and were greated with mounted NYPD. We then marched one block over and marched up to 7th ave where the cops were waiting for us as well as following us. they saturated the street. We shouted "go fight crime!" and other chants and people on the side of the street closer to times square started leaving and then those of us who were on the opposite side were surrounded by cops. One cop told us that we were all being placed under arrest for disorderly conduct. About 30 of us were arrested and about another 20 allowed to leave. we were all handcuffed with the non metal handcuffs and marched to the paddywagon. i was towards the back of the group, and by the looks of things the paddywaggon was full so the cops let me and about 7 other people leave. what was most frustrating about this is the fact that THE COPS NEVER TOLD US TO LEAVE THE SIDEWALK! They told us we were blocking the sidewalk after they started making arrests. I started chanting "they never told us to leave!" which was met to the person next to me with "they never let us leave!"i consider myself very lucky as i am now reading reports of people having to stay in jail overnight. hope this could be of assistance.
