I was asked to participate in a bike activist group organized by people whose names I do not know. I was very impressed by their organization and elan in the face of the appalling control the demonstration by NYC Police. The right to peaceably assemble is a constitutional right. The City used terrorist threats as a way to prevent demonstrations around the UN. They also blocked access to Times Square, Union Square, Bryant Park and other public areas. Union Square ,in particular, has been used as a place to assemble and protest for over a hundred years. The bicycle activists used smart mob technology, cell phones , walky talkies, and IMs to keep in touch with others and pinpoint the next stop to encourage deomonstrators and try to alleviate the funneling and cordon that NYC Police used to choke off the demonstration. We met activist and author Travis Hugh Culley who used hi-jinks, performance, and theater to help the cause. He was arrested after lying down on 6th Ave and 47th St intersection. After he was arrested the phalanx kept on working the edges of the Times Square Area which was sealed off. I met Travis later and he gave me copies of his book "The Immortal Class: bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power" for some of the people riding with us.
