The New York City Independent Media Center condemns the recent attack on one of its reporters, Kevin Prichard, by WBAI employee Paul DiRienzo. Prichard visited the studios of WBAI on Monday morning seeking to interview staff and volunteers about the station's recent troubles. Upon presenting his New York City IMC press credentials to DiRienzo, Prichard was physically and verbally assaulted without provocation. Prichard suffered a broken finger, a cut lip and multiple abrasions. He was treated at St. Vincents Hospital and released Monday night. DiRienzo also destroyed Prichard's microphone and mini-disc tape recorder. According to Prichard's legal team, the reporter plans to press charges against DiRienzo. DiRienzo has also literally added insult to injury by making on-air allegations that 1.) Prichard assaulted him and 2.) that the Independent Media Center is a George Soros Foundation-funded right wing front group bent on destroying WBAI and the Pacifica Network. The IMC is a global, grassroots, volunteer-run multimedia news network that seeks to give a voice to people whose messages are either ignored or marginalized by mainstream corporate media. It is what Pacifica, in many ways, used to be before its leadership was hijacked by a cabal of corporate and governmental functionaries who have no interest in that network's historic mission to be a voice for the voiceless. The IMC's only association with the Soros Foundation occurred last August when one local IMC (Los Angeles) received a onetime $10,000 grant to help finance the satellite uplink for the IMC's video coverage of the Democratic National Convention and the protests that swirled around it. Neither the global IMC nor any of the network's 50 local, autonomous chapters have had any association with the Soros Foundation before or since. The IMC is a shared labor of love of thousands of media activists around the world. DiRienzo's misleading conspiracy theories about the IMC are as deplorable as his conduct toward Kevin Prichard. Prichard sustained $300 in damage to his audio equipment. He also faces medical and legal expenses arising from this incident. We urge all those who support independent media to assist us in helping Prichard defray the expenses he has has occurred for simply doing his work. Thank you for your concern and support.
