New Date! New Date! New Date! New Date! 2003 NYC ANARCHIST / ANTI-AUTHORITARIAN SUMMER GATHERING! All Authoritarians welcome, but please leave newspapers at home. Saturday, August 16th, 11am, Prospect Park, Brooklyn RAIN DATE: This is the rain date. (http://www.weather.com) LOCATION ... same place a last year. Because so many people enjoyed the bucolic location next to the lake, we thought it would be a good location to return to (but we'll give better directions this time!). DIRECTIONS ... by Subway: take the F train into Brooklyn, to 15th Street / Prospect Park stop, which is at the corner of the park. Walk into the park, make a right, following the bike / jogging road, walk around the lake, until you see the "Peristyle", which is a colonnade building (looks like the Greek Parthenon, with nothing on the inside. They have weddings there) and look left, near the water, for the festivities! Alternative train ... take the Q four stops into Brooklyn to Prospect Park stop, enter the park. Make left, follow the bike / jogging road with the lake on your right. Peristyle will be on your left, gathering on your right. By Car ... there is adequate parking near where we are gathering. Park on Parkside Avenue, between the baseball fields ("Parade Ground") and the park. You'll see the peristyle just inside the park. From Grand Army Plaza ... the lake and gathering location is on the opposite side of the park from Grand Army Plaza, so if you enter here, just follow the bike jogging road around the park, in either direction, and look for the peristyle. From Mars ... a special welcome to all Martians attending the gathering! Please land and park all space ships on the great lawn. And please fly out all interstellar debris. Better (?) directions via a friend: "Appreciate the reminder about picnic. I take issue with those directions though. last year one Manhattan couple whom i know had real trouble with them too. Either method more than doubles the walking distance, so it's a longer than one mile walk from the subway with all one's picnic junk on a warm day in what most folks find a weird borough. And not everybody will liberate shopping carts. The Peristyle and picnic are near Parkside Avenue and Parade Place. Locals know where the nearby Parade Grounds are. Closest subway stop by far is actually the Q to PARKSIDE AVE (not Prospect Park). "Then walk into park; bear left with lake on your right; after about 400 yards turn right at Greek Parthenon-looking Peristyle building & walk towards lake, look for signs." Second closest stop, by a good margin, is F to FORT HAMILTON PKWY (not 16th ST stop). "Then walk towards park and away from highway, crossing E. 7th St., Sherman St. Enter at Park Circle, bear right on park road, with lake on your left. after about 400 yards turn left at Greek Parthenon-looking Peristyle building & walk towards lake, look for signs." (Admittedly F to 16th ST is right in the park so simpler to find the park road. But it's so much further away from the Peristyle & picnic.) Also lots of signs at subways and park entrances would help, but I'm not volunteering. That flag helped. Maybe an attributed "alternate directions" blurb would shut me up on this method fetish. To reach the Peristyle walk on Parkside Ave. which runs along the South end of Prospect Park. The Peristyle (looks like a Greek temple) is visible from Parkside Ave. across from the Parade Grounds, halfway between Park Circle (west) and the Pergola (east). For train service, take the D to Parkside Ave. then walk west on Parkside Ave. and find the Peristyle (about 1/5 mile). Parkside Avenue is less scenic than the South Lake Drive but simplest route yet." LOOK FOR THE BANNER AND SIGNS PROCLAIMING THE FUN!! What to Bring: Frisbees, soccer balls, veggie hotdogs, kites, lawn chairs, sunglasses, tanning oils, watermelon, pets, blankets, children, and lots and lots of food!   ------------------------------------------------------------------------   Strategy / Discussion Groups: Strategy / discussion sessions are planned throughout the day, so that those wishing so can pick and choose which sessions they would like to attend (or propose). We'll have a dry erase board at the main gathering with times and locations nearby in the park for the discussions. To propose a strategy meeting, or volunteer to facilitate, please contact the projects collective. We'll post all discussion group proposals on the website. No proposals will be denied (how could we?!) Alternatively you can just show up to the picnic and do ya own thing! Planned sessions: 1. Anarchist People of Color informal discussion. 2. FTAA Miami mobilization...getting organized. Also, RNC, WTO, etc. 3. Anarchists and the war. What up? Need more discussion? 4. NYC Anarchist Union? Do we need a local anarchist union, federation, or organization? What about that tribes thang? 5. MORE! NOTE: the above sessions and content / topics of the Strategy / Discussions are entirely up to those that attend. We make no presumption to know what people want to talk about. Propose your own! This gathering initiated by the projects collective, however we hold no sovereignty over it:-) Map of gathering location: http://www.anarco-nyc.net/gatheringmap.gif The proj: http://www.anarco-nyc.net/contact.html
