Billy is right. We used to have critical mass here and the police would ride *with* the cyclists on their police bikes and on their police motorcycles. Dunno why we never have critcal mass here anymore tho. Could be because they essentially got what they wanted - a paved bike trail and the streets downtown (and a few other places) repainted to include bike lanes. Very bike friendly here, too bad it's rural and winter 8 months of the year.

yeah - thanks to critical mass. especially to all those who refused to second guess themselves. what a way to start this weekend.

How come bikes need a permit to "ride in a procession"? Cars do it every day without a permit.

i live somewhere where the cops basically tell motorists where to shove it during CM rides, so it's really disheartening to see the NYPD is obeying BushCo's command to arrest as many scary protesters as possible.

i used to be a republican, you know. too bad it's become the party of pissy babies and godhead tyrants. but then again i used to drive a car, too. my bad.

In fact the NYC road law allows you on a bicycle to take one lane of traffic, like a car, except where there's a bike lane or where bicycles interfere with the flow of traffic. Ticketing is arbitrary and depends really on the individual cop. Also, you know crowd control is important to the military. More important I think, is the propaganda being generated by the republicans- they needed to make a big spectacle in order for the local media to instill more fear in the rest of America. Fact is, last year a pissed off NYPD arresed as many if not more people one peaceful Friday critical mass in NYC, after which they tried the tactic of sending articulate, kindly ambassadors in white uniforms to Union Square before each ride to talk to riders, just to get info you understand, but not one rider could name the leaders and organizers so suddenly there were motorized and cyclist police accompaying the ride, a new policy of co-operation? Do you really think NYPD had decided to be supportive of the rides???

That notice to bicyclists certainly doesn't look "of the people, by the people, for the people". At least not from here on the other side of the planet, in Norway. (Maybe that's how far away one needs to be, not to be caught up in the details, but get the overall impression). Who're the people elevating themselves to writing with such condescension? And how come they're allowed to? Who're the people using the streets those notices are posted on, anyway? Who's the "impeding" a "serious offence" to, btw?

The law clearly states that you are forbidden to assemble without express police permission. If you disobey, you must expect punishment. The law is similar here in the United Kingdom, and subjects know what to expect if they are disobedient. Subjects here know there are no such things as "rights", only duties. The most important duty is to be obedient!

While I respect your right to ride a bicycle, I happened to be riding in an ambulance behind one of these "demonstrations" once and it took an extra five minutes to reach the hospital. The rules on mass bike usage have been put in place for a reason, namely the organization of the critical reasources that we all need to live (transport, medical access, etc.). You might have a problem with cars and their oil usage, but there is a more appropriate forum for this, instead of needlessly risking the lives of those around you.

I agree with NR, cars should have to get a permit to ride in procession, two abreast, in tunnels, etc.
