=v= The numbers swelled at Union Square North, and then somebody told me there were just as many people at Union Square South! A very good sign.
#file_1#I usually love choppers when they're built by Black Label Bike Club, but this one wasn't:
#file_2#Also, somebody forgot to tell the NYPD that Critical Mass is for nonmotorized bikes:
#file_3#Once the ride went underway, the police split us up into multi-masses:
#file_4#This legal observer didn't get a green hat, but she did get a green bike:
#file_5#My multi-massed mini-mass went south down Broadway to Houston, hung a right, hung a right up 6th Avenue, squiggled around some more, and then went to Times Square for the traditional bike lift:
#file_6#=v= Things got hairy as we approached Madison Square Garden. Police made an arbitrary bunch of arrests right in front of me. My mini-mass split into three directions.
It was dark and we were riding fast, so I got no photos until we got to St. Marks. By then we were a Folding Bike Bloc:
#file_7#At first, the endpoint was 100% fun. Power to the people!
#file_8#If Dick Cheney was on the ride (it'd be good for his heart, you know), he might've seen this:
#file_9#=v= Alas, the police showed up to "clear the streets" -- or rather, to occupy the streets and block traffic. Some folks didn't get out of the streets fast enough for their tastes, so they made some arrests while we chanted, "Let him go!" and did another bike lift:
#file_10#The police stuck around for hours and didn't seem to enjoy the after party at all. Also, they had a bunch of paddy wagon buses idling nearby, and some helicopters, wasting a lot of gas. They really don't seem to understand the point of having a nonpolluting demonstration, do they?
