Aaron, this is a demo of US Americans against the Unamerican man who has taken the country's respect and dragged it into mud, so the flag is appropriate!

the flags are draped over mock coffins... i don't know how many they had but it was a hell of a lot. i guess it's because they won't let us see the actual coffins as they come back. i don't know if it was the same group but there were a bunch of coffins draped with black cloth too...
pretty clever.

uh, sweet.

no, actually there was a point at which i had the same attitude, but that was impossible to maintain the more contact i had with people (particularly the ones whom college students with something to prove would call "proletarians") outside the relatively tiny and insular activist circles. what i've come to understand is that when you burn a flag or make any other sweeping, unilaterally anti-american gesture, you're beating up on a lot of people who have it pretty bad already. because, see, the "rednecks" and the "white trash" and the "bible-thumpers" and the guys with confederate flags on their trucks aren't a different group than the proletariat in this country; it's just that some activists tend to use the latter term when they want to treat the proletarian as a vague, idealized modern-day Noble Savage and the former terms when they're actually talking about any of them in particular.

but, goes the kneejerk response, the government has done such terrible things-- well, yeah, clearly, that's why they're out there protesting. so is that not america protesting? is america only america when (and insofar as) it's involved in something reprehensible? i guess i think that it's the right of the people as a whole, not of just the state, to decide what their flag stands for.

I cried when I saw the flag draped "coffins" on C-span. Later I was proud when I learned that the group was from Texas. I estimated about 100 coffins. 1 for ever 10 people killed by Bush Inc is my guess. Don't deport Bush to Texas.. We don't want him either!!

There were 1000 coffins, one for each serviceman killed during this war.. It took me an hour to pass them all.
It *really* made a point.

wOw! I'm a Canadian feeling helpless watching as the world falls prey to a madman but after seeing these pictures of Americans banding together for the good of the world entire, in spite of 'the fear' (there's that pesky word again) of being arrested...I feel hope! Thank you New York!~

Just to clear something up here; I marched holding one of the flag draped coffins, next to the brother of the person who brought the idea to fruition. There were 600 coffins. Mainly flag draped, however there black draped coffins as well. NO the "group" was not from Texas - it was a melting pot of Americans and otherwise who served as pallbearers.

I thought the coffins represented 1 for every 100 terrorists killed for the good of the world.

I was able to volunteer as one of the pall bearers for the 1000 coffins. As my dad had just passed away this summer. He was a decorated WW2 vet, and lifelong republican who in 2003 gave up his republican affiliation and registered democrat for the first tome in his life.

He intended to vote for Kerry but passed away too soon. In his words "This president is a stinker".

I felt proud to be able to carry the coffin and my dads spirit into the protest march.

And thanks to the many New Yorkers who made this out of towner feel welcome.

George W Bush

Any one who protests against the War on Terror is unAmerican and a proponant and supporter of the Axis of Evil. Freedom frightens people who are terrorists. Terrists never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.

Even though we didn't find the stockpiles we affected to find, Saddam Hussein had the capability of making weapons. I know all the war rhetoric, but it's all aimed at achieving peace.

Yo, John.
You wrote:
"bet the people in the dungeons and torture chambers under Saddam Hussein are glad your not in charge..... Your all pathetic."
The truth is that Bush and Hussein are both selfish, greedy, inhumane men who are responsible for the deaths of MANY innocent people. BOTH of them need to be stopped, but our taxes are paying Bush's salary.

every event i have been to has the major media outlets...the "liberal" media as you would have it be...providing numbers of people in attendance around a small fraction of what was in fact there...EVERY time. its a scandal, im not too sure on what the point of it all is, but it definetly serves to take some steam out of the appeal of the movement to those not participating in it.

We have come to accept that we are not going to get fair and accurate reporting from any of those news stations, because in 15 years it has not happened one time. Please, learn to stop taking their news as THE news and not "education". Learning to count is different from learning to open your eyes.

Thank you America

I've just come back from Iraq and I asked them if they knew about the anti war movement. They said they did and thanked us for it. When I asked them what they wanted from us they said more protests bigger protests and industrial action. Keep up the good work guys your inspiring. I’m an Australian writing this from London and I hope that Australia can vote out John Howard in October. I would just also like to say we’re basically getting no coverage of this over here in the media. They are telling everyone about the conference and talking about its supporters. There was something on the BBC yesterday but that’s about it. The European Social forum is on in October and if anyone has any footage or photographs from the demonstrations and would like it put in a film please contact me. I’m a documentary maker and my e. mail address is  wenonafargher@hotmail.com.

For me protesting on the streets is telling the people of Iraq that the people of America do not support their government. It’s the most powerful thing we can do. The next stage is for your unions and any type of group to make contact with your corresponding groups in Iraq. There is so much going on over there that we don’t know about. The Iraqi people need a voice in the international community, if you can give that to them please.

Be the change you want to see in the world…

Bill Maddock

Too bad that neither you, nor any other, so-called, activist group, has the intelligence or ability to tell the truth...the truth hurts and does not support your positions. You are so blinded by your own hatred and stubborness that the 'truth' is only that with which you agree. That is a dangerous and stupid position to have.

Re: Images from prtest march aug 29th

Aug 31, 2004 01:50PM EDT

Dear Axel

The front page of the NY Times puts the number at half a million - and a police officer verified that number.

I was there and can tell you from firsthand experience that it was far, far greater than "100,000" or "tens of thousands" and that half a million sounds about right. I can tell from the tone of your post that you were either not there or not capable of comprehending the vastness of that march. It was enormous - and 90% of the mainstream press downplayed it... big time.

Re: Images from prtest march aug 29th

Aug 31, 2004 02:06PM EDT

Dear Bill

Perhaps instead of posting your bullshit rhetoric, next time you could take a few moments to provide some facts or examples of what YOU feel is "the truth"? It would do WONDERS for the validity of your position.

Re: Images from prtest march aug 29th

Aug 31, 2004 02:07PM EDT

Dear Greg

I'm not interested in what images you've seen on "every left wing media outlet in the nation". That's irrelevant to me. Do you know why? Because I was THERE. I was off my ass and into the streets. YOU were not. You're receiving ALL of your information SECOND HAND and simply deciding which version of events is "the truth" based entirely upon what YOU would like the truth to actually be.

My advice to you - get off your ass. And into the streets. Learn from firsthand experiences. See things for yourself. The minute you start to do that will be the minute you learn that the world outside isn't everything yours newspapers and nightly news programs have made it out to be.

And as far as the half a million protesters count is concerned, check the NY Times for Aug 30th. Front page article puts it squarely at half a million with a police officer verifying that number. As someone who was actually there, who went through the march, and then sat down for HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS while watching the REST of the march go past, I can tell you that that's the most accurate figure ANY "news" outlet as put forth.

Like Lloyd, I'm a Canadian (and a U.K. resident), and I can't express how heartening it is to see Americans, so reviled for their percieved complacency, actively protesting against Bush. I wish I was there, but know that a lot of the rest of the world is especially proud of Americans that actively protest. I believe it is harder to resist and speak out in a country with so many superficial benefits and so much hidden corruption. Let it be hidden no longer. You are all an inspiration for myself and others to do more.

All of you idiots who truly believe this monster (Bush) is in the right for doing what he is doing, why are you here? You should be in Iraq fighting the "terrorists". Bunch of idiots, Besides this guys whole family being involved with illegal war profiteering for the past several decades, (his grandfather [Prescott sheldon bush] and his great grand daddy [Samuel Prescott bush] help fund the nazi movement) He has lied to the American people on several occasions and led americas sons and daughter, mom and dads, aunts and uncles, to war for the sole purpose of monetary gain. Why Have we not invaded north korea? they have wmd. Why would the bush try to discredit kerry's war record when he himself was too much of a coward to even go to the battlefields. But he has no problem with sending young people to get killed!!! WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!!

An Iranian Thank you

I`m in New Zealand, watching the developments in NYC with great interest. The next two months affects me deeply, even though I am not American. Thank you to the brave citizens who marched and protested. As Noam Chomsky said, there is no point talking about it, if one does not do anything about it.

For the sake of America, and for the sake of the whole world, I sincerely hope that Bush et al fail to be re-elected - not that he was elected in the first place...

All the best in your efforts to build a genuine democracy.

Keep it locked.

Whats sad is that I have a just turned 16 year old sister & she told my mother that all her classmates want Bush to win. Stating that they all feel as though former President Clinton ruined America & Bush came & fixed everything. Now I wish I can knock some sense into those kids heads but I can't. I can also tell by what was said that it's the work of those "DUMB!" parents those kids have. Just what we need future Greed-publicans
(Republicans).

(CBS) As opposite as George Bush and John Kerry may seem to be, they do share a common secret - one they've shared for decades, and one they will not share with the electorate.

The secret: details of their membership in Skull and Bones, the elite Yale University society whose members include some of the most powerful men of the 20th century

His father, Prescott Bush, several other relatives and partners, and Roland and Averell Harriman, who sponsored the Bush family, were also members of this secret society.

The politically aggressive Guaranty Trust Company, run almost entirely by Skull and Bones initiates, was a financial vehicle of these families in the early 1900s. Guaranty Trust's support for the Bolshevik and Nazi revolutions overlapped the more intense endeavors in these fields by the Harrimans, George Walker and Prescott Bush a few blocks away, and in Berlin.

Once you‘re in, you‘re in: ‘Skull and Bones’ is for life. Talking about ‘Skull and Bones’ is for others. There are a lot of Bonesmen who did not talk, but did succeed, Henry Luce, who created “TIME†magazine and all its cousins; Harold Stanley, founder of Morgan Stanley; Henry Lewis Stimson, the secretary of war under FDR and Truman; William F. Buckley; Averell Harriman, long-time governor of New York.

And then there are the presidents: William Howard Taft, whose father, Alphonso, had helped found the group and whose son Robert was a senator; George Herbert Walker Bush, whose father, Prescott, was a Bonesman and a senator; the current President Bush, although his kid at Yale has not been tapped for Skull and Bones—even though they do admit women now. His child is not Skull and Bones. His opponent is.

Meet John Kerry, Bonesman class of ‘66. And if this needs to be weirder for you, his wife Teresa Kerry‘s first husband, John Heinz, his father was ‘Skull and Bones.’

To Bush supporters...I fear you really are not interested in the truth, not interested in what the rest of the world thinks....if you are about to embark on a war that the rest of the world does not sanction, perhaps you should reconsider your actions? Perhaps it was not the right thing to do? ...faulty intelligence my butt! Remember "Bin Laden determined to attack inside the US? Do you really want your leader to assert his lack of intelligence as a means for continuing a war? On a people who have never done anything to us?... follow the links provided by 'xx' above and you will know the truth if you dare...

Basically, the world is run by 5 men called the illuminati who are putting in their last fight for THE NEW WORLD ORDER - look it up on google. Bush and Kerry are just puppets (but we've already tried Bush and he just equals war and bloodshed). If you want to get to the meat of the matter you need to start at the core and the illuminati are the core...expose them and they will run from the light, keep denying their existance and they will run the world.

The first thing you need to do is turn off your TV - boycott the mainstream media it is all controlled by the illuminati...that's why there is no coverage of the protests. There is so much more...suss out Alex Jones, Michael Ruppert and perhaps David Icke (if you have a really open mind)...

I am happy to see Bush supporters here, no sense in preaching to the already converted. But you really need to open your eyes, it is in fact your last chance... all is not lost on you though, you are here!

What a joy it is to see so many New Yorkers out protesting that pig of a prezidant that an unfortunate few of you actually voted for. Now can you see what a big mistake that was. Okay, so he wasn't elected, only 'selected' by his Daddy's rich and corrupt friends on the high court. For the sake of the rest of the world and all the innocents that will be killed by US weapons of mass destruction, please, please, please, all goodhearted Americans, vote this mass murdering moron out of office. In fact, get rid of the Republicans all together. You may have had a few problems with Clinton and the Demokratz, but at least they put your country's economy back in the black, after that nut Reagan and King George the Furst ran up huge deficits with their corruption and bogus wars.

THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS, AMERICA. DON'T LET THE REST OF THE PLANET DOWN.

I found  http://www.newdepression.com/onethousandcoffins/ on the web. I travelled almost 1000 miles to NY last week to be a part of it. As far as this being a 'democratic sponsored event' that's wrong. It ran on people like me who volunteered. The people who sponsored it took out a loan to do it. (By the way if you wish you could have participated, you can still help them by donating a few bucks to help them pay back their loan at their website).

Hundreds of people signed up to carry the coffins by email, others joined the day of the march. They deserve much credit as the march took over 6 hours and it was one of the hottest days in NYC this year.

One more thing. The sponsors asked for (and got) repect for the coffins, respect for the dead, and respect for the American flag. Though there were lots of crazy, wild people participating in the march, but the coffin procession was for the most part, slow, solemn and respectful. The flags almost never were allowed to touch the ground and each flag was folded according to protocol at the end of the march. I found it refreshing to see supposed "left-wing hippies" who showed such respect, and at the same time brought such shame to the administration. It was good to see the flag as a symbol for 'our side' since the republicans have worked hard for the last couple years to make sure the flag is the symbol of their superficial patriotism only.

I wish to thank the tens of thousands of participants in the RNC protests, it was truly democracy in action! I would also like to ask everyone: "How can we defeat the War Criminals (Bush Administration) in this election." There has never been a shortage or protests against the wars of this administration, I was a participant in the Washington, DC protests on September 29 & 30th 2001, prior to the illegal invasion of Afghanistan! I was also present in San Francisco in March of 2003, when the US began its invasion and bombing of Iraq. Again, there has never been a shortage of protests and protestors to the Bush Administration policies.

We have been unsuccessful in stopping or changing the policies so far. Our nation cannot tolerate or survive "Four more Years" of Bush!

(1) Should we take to the neighborhoods and help "Kerry" (definitely the lesser of two evils)?

(2) Should we continue to demonstrate and be ignored by the media and the government?

(3) Give us your suggestion, how can we "Defeat" this Evil Empire at home?

I am a Republican, and I enjoyed the protests. I was not at the convention .. University had already started .. but I would've loved to have gone down to see the different point of views. Very interesting .. although some took it a bit too far .. but that is what happens at any protest of either part of any opinion. I love when protests go correctly.

Good to see thousands of decent American PATRIOTS defy the thick, hick oil-guzzlers who think Rambo won the vietnam war and who blame liberals for everything when those same liberals founded the USA by a revolution (ooh dangerous commie talk !)against Brit imperialism.

Thank you for the photographs of all the protesters at the RNC. It was wonderful to see such a turnout. We never got the full impact of it from television news, probably because they limited it to as little exposure as possible. Whatever happened to free press and freedom of expression? At least free expression reared its most welcome head!

Never a shortage of anti-establishment protesters when republican have power

I was unimpressed by protesters and crackpot t-shirts/slogans/signs as it was dull and predictable.
