From what I understand, the NYPD cannot legally videotape protestors, under the constraints handed down by the Handschau Agreement.

It's true. Whoever took those photos of the cop should really make them available to the National Lawyers Guild (212-679-6018), preferably along with the location and time they were taken, and any identifying info about the officers/unit. Unless there was an actual crime taking place, or reason to believe that one was about to (more than just the protest march itself!)-- the NYPD is in violation of the new law.

Detectives from NYPD TARU units were doing the same in Union Square.
If you see this happening, notify any legal observers present immediately. Try to collect the name and badge number of the offending officer--and let the officer know that what he/she is doing is illegal.
Videotaping protesters is ONLY legal when a crime or confrontation is in progress, or when crime is imminent. No other circumstances allow for it.

ok, fess up, what drugs are you on? when you are in a public place, you have no right to object to photographing or videotaping. the same way you can videotape police activity, you too can be videotaped.
you can rail about any agreement you like, but if you take it to court, you will lose. the key question you have to ask yourself is, do you have a reasonable expectation of privacy? when you are marching down a public street the answer is clearly NO!
if you were on private property, with a closed door between you and the police, you could claim that you had a reasonable expectation of privacy, and it would be ruled an unreasonable search. bitching that the police are photographing you, probably in hopes of catching you in the act of trashing some place or other, just marks you out to be a bunch of crybabies.
ask your mothers. if you have to wear a mask, or hide from the police to do something, you are probably being bad.
trust me on this. if it was a facist police state, it wouldn't be a video camera, it would be a rifle pointed at your head. and you wouldn't have a web site with which to post your rants on either.

I promise you they don't care about your rights to protest and I expect protests to be "banned" in the near future.

Wake up, for those that are old enough, they have been living in a police state ever since they started to tell you what you could or not use to have a good time, this would be about one hundred years give or take twenty. Read your ninth amendment, for americans that is, and ask yourself if the marijuana user has retained that 'right' to use it, or is it the ability to use it.
When a politician says they need to compromise when in the congress or senate, it is apart of political life, tell them no one should compromise when freedom is at stake, then boot him out onto the street.

"Just want to tell PhotoMe that the police in the UK that he is referring to on the side of the road are actually taking pictures of speeding cars."
Colin Piman - just shows how many times you have got off your arse to do anything, e.g. protest. The UK police units which are referred to hear normally comprise of one (extremely well paid) civilian freelance videographer/photographer (both still and video cameras mounted together) with between two and three minders. There can be between one and three (or more) of these units depending on the size of the demonstration - not unlike the New York photos.
They are at almost all demonstrations and don't like being photographed themselves. Neither do they like their field of vision being obscured.
Colin, I suggest you get out and do a little bit more than spectate! Or maybe you like sitting on your arse watching 'You've Been Framed"!

To the person who speculated that the cop might have been videotaping for his own private use/collection...if that were true, then that's still not acceptable...he's getting paid (with tax dollars) to do a job, not a hobby....furthermore, the 2 white shirts, superior officer cops (behind him) would also be complicit in allowing him to "slack off " on the job....
To the person who said that individuals don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy in public...fine, but if that's true, then what's good for the goose is good for the gander...try approaching a bunch of cops standing around with a video camera and start recording....in about 5 seconds, they will come up to you and order you to stop and demand to know why you were videoing them - refuse to answer and expect at least a warrant check and very possibly a trip to the station....sorry, if we can't record them, then they can't record us....

Actually, in UK the pigs've been legally able to film demos since about 1994-5 and the Criminal Justice Bill - I remember filming them filming me & they initially ran away but then threatened to arrest me. As for civil liberties, look around - they're being increasingly ignored, both here in the UK and in the US - first they bang up anybody who isn't white, like in London in Belmarsh prison where people are held without charge for any amount of time - then, well, you don't have to be a genius to see they're beginning to ignore the niceties of liberal democracy...Still, it's great to see New York protests on this sort of scale! Keep it up guys! One solution - revolution!

Pumping Iraqi blood into American gas tanks, this is freedom. Robbing the poor and giving to the rich is freedom. Having a butthole like Bush for presidents is freedom. Protesting in NYC is freedom. Once you take someone else freedom away you will take you own away in the process.
Currently in the U.S. we have over 600 concentration camps located in the wilderness areas, fully operational and ready to go. (Google if you care). Of course, "they" started building them before the term of our "el presidente". 911 is a great excuse to Patriot Acts I and II (originally introduced in 1984 under a different name, but failed miserably) and, of course, as we have learned today, we "can't win war on terrorism". But we sure have created a Stalinist society.
This is a long subject, but in a nutshell, they (manipulators of the politics and culture) are getting ready to introduce the most structured, consumer-slave society ever created. If you a free-thinking, spiritual human being, you hardly fit in. They know you will rebel, so, that's where the Oklahoma and 911 fit in.
Through methodical manipulation of the American culture, they have succeeded creating milions of sub-humans, who are posting their festering comments on how we shoud "get out" and "shut up and get a job". It is hardly worth an effort to engage in the dialog. Try to explain to your cat Emerson's writing. When a person loosing his mental capacities and a sense of humanity, he resort to affection towards symbols: Mickey Mouse, Elvis Prestley, Amercian flag, military uniform, etc.,
So, why are they filming?
P.S. Don't give up.
