Oh, nothing like post-modernism to ruin everything. When will we move beyond this lame display of theater. It's not working much, aye? and in some cases, like women protestors/groups using sex appeal to sell their ideas, it's downright insulting and a giant step backwards.

You know women don't have to give up their sexuality to be "liberated".

It's old white career women from the 80s that wanted everyone to give up their womenhood and sexuality in favor of a corporate career.

Now women may actually want to stay at home and raise kids...what is a better expression of womanhood than raising your own kids? Getting a CEO job and hiring a nanny? I think not. Also women are sexual. Should women deny their sexuality? Are you some kind of conservative? Should women be ashamed of their bodies?

Maybe you're just an uptight bastard and the sight of attractive females makes you uncomfortable?

good question! although it helps somewhat the FACT is there will be NO CHANGE without SERIOUS revolution. Revolution that utilzes any and all methods!

What much more clearly doesn't work is overearnest, joyless demonstrations. I'm thrilled to see theater and carnival at demonstrations. It is a celebration of the creative capacity of human culture in the face of a machine that relentlessly seeks to grind us down. No single demonstration will deliver victory. We need to build a culture of resistance that can nurture for the long haul. There is no reason we can't be BOTH angry AND joyful. We all contain multitudes!!!

Festive demonstrations like this draw in many more people than the 'serious' protests mentioned in other comments. Anybody who believes there will be real revolution only by using 'any means necessary' is an idiot. The phrase 'any means necessary' is usually code for violence. That's the LAST thing that has any possibility of working. Face it, the cops and armies have all the guns, and they won't hesitate to use them. We can NEVER out-gun them. But we got the truth, and the people to celebrate truth. If you let the people celebrate, you'll get your revolution. So lighten up. Get a funny sign or some drums or just get some friends to march and be happy. The enemy hates it when we do that.

The above is the reason that authorities world-wide have done all they can to curb the organic
carnivalesque celebrations and/or confrontations
that arise at professional football(soccer) matches. Obviously though, carnival isnt enough,
and just as we are being assaulted on multiple fronts (political, social, cultural, psychological, sexual, etc.), our assault must be carried on on multiple fronts. And anyway, if you really think that that the 'revolution' is represented in one rally, (no matter how big), you should probably go back to the coffeehouse and your middle-class existence, (or dig deeper in your analysis). Revolution is lived everyday.
But, pacifcism will get you nowhere. Its a piveleged white middle-class dream.
To be true revolutionaries, we really must use all weapons at our disposal, else we're just playing activist.

the anti-carnival arguments are nonsense.

we are in a situation where organizing something like a general strike in the usa is remote, or are you living in your head? you can say whatever you want to about what is ultimately neccesary (by any means, etc.) but and this is a big but, you MUST deal with the historical situation as it is, at present. This is a big part of a materialist understanding of reality.

We need ways to re-invigorate conciousness and spirited solidarity. We need to build networks of resistance not just cry that we need revolution now and by any means.

We are up against a big machine. It has power.

And so do we. This is what they want us to be confused and isolated about. Being correct in our thinking where we deny the power of collective assembly on a spirited and raucous level in combination with anger, plays right into the hands of the power structure and its desire to keep us inoculated little bio-workers for the same ole same ole.

i suggest there is no single correct way to do anything.

thats the way authoritarians think, and we are all susceptible to our indoctrination within an authoritarian state, so you might want to watch your own authoritarian leanings when you are telling others what to think and how to behave.

i think the largely peaceful demonstration shown on C-SPAN Sunday probably nudged hearts and minds that would have been turned off by more aggressive behavior.

i speculate that Sunday would not have happened if Seattle (and others) had not been aggressive

i see the present revolution as a process, that to be successful, will eventually need to include damn near everyone

people enter the revolutionary process from where they are and struggle to come to terms with the clash between their indoctrinated beliefs and their dawning understanding of the way the world really is. this is an emotionally painful personal process for many.

i think we are more likely to reach the goal of a consensually organized society when we honor others where ever they are on their personal path of discovery.
