NEW YORK - President Bush swiftly evoked Sept. 11 after arriving here Wednesday night to prepare for a Republican convention finale that supporters hope will rekindle the widespread public support he enjoyed in the aftermath of the tragedy.

In the mostly working-class borough of Queens, Bush gathered at an Italian-American community hall with a group of firefighters and firefighters' widows and accepted the endorsement of a local union representing 8,600 firefighters.

Live scenes of Bush with spouses and friends of firefighters who died at the World Trade Center in 2001 were beamed into the convention, where speakers often have returned to the theme of the president's leadership against terrorism.

Bush will accept his party's presidential nomination in a speech tonight.

"To see the courage and compassion and decency of our fellow Americans during an incredible time of stress has shaped my thinking about the future of this country," he said in Queens.

The president's eyes appeared to moisten as he stood with union members and held a black fire helmet that said, "Commander in Chief."

Recalling his visit to the Trade Center site a few days after the towers were felled in the attacks, Bush said, "The truth of the matter is, the inspiration I received from the firefighters on that site is something I'll never forget."

The local union broke with its national affiliate and other state units.

It is backing Democrat John Kerry for president.

I went over to Elmhurst cause that flaming asshole was not going to stink up my backyard without a fight. It was a good crowd, but pretty small. The most spirited protestor was a 14-year-old girl. Whoever she is, she will be a force to reckon with down the road. Bush was kept completely out of sight, and we were at least 500 meters away, behind barricades. I like to think he caught a glimpse, but they really seem to keep him oblivious. Surprise? btw: the firefighter photo op was with the president of one union, and the Bush propaganda pit bulls knew that he wasn't wanted in an actual firehouse.

The Bushies present seemed to be local freaks -- the 14 people in NYC who would actually admit to voting for our fearless satanic leader. There was one drunk dude who was really upset that the protestors were penned in closer than the supporters. I had to snicker.
