I was curious how it feels to be responsible for all the lost money going to the police and authorities instead of to the homeless, sick, and truly needy. Do you realize how many people could be fed for the costs associated with just one arrest, let alone thousands. Why are you people so hypocritical? Why are you not taking the money you have all spent on your expensive toys, like camcorders, cameras, $3000 bicycles, hotel rooms, airline tickets, and so on, and not doing something truly beneficial with it? These things need to be destroyed completely and utterly. They have only one purpose...to harm the population.
Sound waves of high intensity at the right frequencies can, as mentioned, liquify your guts, of course they can cause hearing loss, cause you to lose control of bodily functions, destroy buildings, break glass, vibrate machinery apart, cause headaches, nausea, sickness to the point of vimiting right there where you stand. This is completely a weapon of oppression. Its use a a tactical offense weapon is very limited since it relies on the personnel being attacked being in a small confined area in front of it.

It is absolutely curel and unusual punishment being dispensed by the judge, jury, and executioner in front of you. You have no say at all and your body can be permanently damaged.

My mother has been an otolaryngologist and has worked with human hearing for over twenty years, and is not generally very liberal, and has this to say: there is no way, at all, that the LRAD is in any way humane, nor "crowd control" specific (any more than guns are). At 150 DB, anyone within hundreds, HUNDREDS of feet of it's path will be perminently damaged. As others have suggested, not only is a sound wave frequency that intense going to cause victims to lose motor control, but could very easily cause primary motor loss, which in her opinon, could easily cause someone to STOP BREATHING. And though not breathing could be least of someone's problems (!), the latent damage is yet to be addressed in a true, medical environment -- meaning, that the liklihood of brain damage or what she called, semi-jokingly, "super-traumatic" hearing damage is high. Hearing damage caused by such high decibles could lead to killer tinnitus, also known as the ringing or roaring sound heard sometimes when no other sounds can be heard. Severe tinnutis has been described by her patients as "the worst thing ever," causing patients to require anti-depressants, counceling, and sleep aids (suffers say that can't sleep because of the noise, and become dependant on both white-noise generators and sleep drugs). And that is the most minor side-effect she can think of. I can't stress enough how much this is cruel and unusual "crowd control," and how utterly unneccessary it is as what the NYPD claim it is. It has a very, very narrow beam, meaning that it will effect only whom the operator is aiming it at. This means the LRADs number one goal is to terrify people, to show the rest of a crowd what horror awaits them as someone drops to the ground in full seizure, liquid feces running from their pants, hands clutched over bleeding ears. It has a far more emotional impact that tear gas, doesn't it? Let alone that a 'absentminded' sweep across a news van would destory all footage and satellite uplink capability inside...

The NYPD announced that it had the sonic weapons ready...but would most probably not use them unless there was a huge and uncotrollable riot. That's not because they're so kind...it's because of the fear of law suits that would follow. The damage to the ear drum that might ensue would be enough to bring the city to trial by thousands of people with a good case. Nice folks, these keeper s of the peace.

Before you condem the device (LRAD) you should educate yourself to its uses. Its primary use is as a hailing device - the sound travels in a focused direction rather than scatters, so you can hear it further away clearly. Yes it has a "key" and warning tone but the RNC is limited to 120DB voice max anyway, no tone. It is NOT like they are going to go around blasting everone at 1 meter with 150DB of sound like some of you make it sound. 150DB is burst mode, it is not like they are going to start torturing everyone with LRADS. Why not buy a few shares (ATCO, American Technololgy Corp, atcsd.com ) and voice yourself at the shareholders meeting - after educating yourself about the intent of the company of course.

I'm all for anything that can break up a riot.

LRAD can't produce more than 130 db 50 yards away, and I doubt police would use it at closer distances. LRAD is pretty big (33 inches) and demonstrators could hit it with the stones, bricks etc. and disable it. 130 db is 100 fold less than 150 db, about the same as being close to a speaker at the rock concert. (140 db = 1/10 sound pressure compared to 150 db). Not pleasant or healty for prolonged periods but not dangerous either. Much better solution than rubber bullets that killed a girl in Boston.
