So I walked from the direct action in Times Square which had the UFPJ benediction to the rally in Central Park which was. Strange UFPJ had the more radical and militant rally, huh? The UFPJ rally talked in a manner even a normal working class conservative would at least listen too respectfully. One of the speakers was a Vietnam veteran, who talked about how the Bible was what helped him realize war was wrong, about as normal a working class veteran as there was. In fact most of the speakers talked in religious terms, except for the IWW speaker, who talked about how if the working class was more organized, this war would never have happened (which was greeted with loud cheers). Yet this was the radical and militant rally, where Broadway was shut down (for a little while) and people were taken away in the paddy wagon (paddy wagon being an Irish slur, I'm not sure if the paddy is the one arresting or arrested - in this case it was often both). On the other hand, the ANSWER organized rally had some speakers screaming into the microphone "WE MUST OVERTHROW CAPITALISM AND IMPERIALISM WITH REVOLUTION!!!!", yet while the rhetoric was very militant, in many ways it was nothing but a circle jerk tabled by every Trotskyite sect imaginable, including the sect which has a leader who lives in luxury that the party members slave for - do you know which one I mean? Actually it's a trick question - that's what every Trotskyite sect is like. So there it is - a small rally and march with gee-whiz working class veteran types with a broad appeal which was actually more militant, as opposed to a circle jerk of every communist sect around with thousands of people and preaching to the converted ("SMASH IMPERIALISM, TROOPS DESERT, BRING THE WAR HOME!!!" at 10,000 decibels). OK, not every speaker at the Troops Out Now rally was like that, but certainly more than one was, and I got there hours late. Some of the speakers were OK. There was a lot of interesting people there. One guy had a flag which looked like a Communist Party of Kampuchea flag (Khmer Rouge), although I recalled the CPK flag had red in it - I asked the guy and he said it was the flag of some Puerto Rican nationalist group which I forget the name of. Also - Troops Out Now (ANSWER) had a lot of hispanics and blacks at their rally - the UFPJ rally was somewhat lily-white. Which is fine by me, I think there's too much navel gazing and obsession about that to where people start wanting token blacks instead of reaching out to different communities. But that's something on the plus column for Troops Out Now and ANSWER. Lynne Stewart spoke and was applauded heartily, including by myself. I can't believe they're trying to lock this woman up. It makes me glad that I got out of bed and participated. Her speech was good. Anyhow after seeing only a few hundred at the UFPJ blessed march, I was happy to see thousands at this thing. Actually, events were happening in Brooklyn, Queens and other places as well. Which is good, but when people don't coordinate with each other - it's no good. Some people are perfectly happy to go from one event to another. You get a bigger turnout that way.
