YOU COULD BE COMMITTING A CRIME

NYC's Police and Parks Departments have just issued summonses to four people associated with Critical Mass bicycle rides and are asserting that, not only are un-programmed group bike rides a crime, but so is the celebratory or other-based collecting together of more than 20 people in a park without a permit, and most chillingly, that ANNOUNCING THE LOCATION (Union Square) AND TIME (7 P.M.) OF THIS RIDE CONSTITUTES A CRIME. It is not clear at this time if publications which report this legal action as news are also committing a crime, although those listing it probably would be. Mentions of this on websites is also specifically prohibited, although conversations between consenting adults may still be allowed.

If these insults to the Constitution bother you, please consider showing up in Union Square tonight, Friday March 25th on skates, feet, or bike. Express your total disgust with a City administration that continues to target and send to jail, responsible and concerned individuals, for the crime of riding a bike and living to talk about it. Are these aroused environmentalists' real offense their active opposition to the status quo, including its oversized cargo of life and injury-threatening machines?

STILL WE RIDE and talk, and publish, and broadcast ,and blog and .....................

And all this on the same day the NYC Auto Show opens, here inthe "Irony Capital of the World", continuing, in the words of its official spokes person, "America's love affair with the car."

I showed up there despite my bike being in the shop, and saw lots of smaller rides taking off, splitting up and regrouping as a massive police presence brought traffic to a honking half from 16th st to 22nd on 5th ave and b'way.

Thank god the NYPD is watching out for the real criminals.

2 gunmen steal $5M in jewels

Two gunmen posing as messengers slipped into a Diamond District wholesale business Friday afternoon and walked out with an estimated $5 million in jewels, police said.

The bandits, dressed in black, their faces covered by ski masks, appeared to have carefully planned the robbery, taking advantage of the reduced security in place for Good Friday.

It would be asking too much for the NYPD to shift their priorities to real crimes; I guess that would involve some actual effort on their part.

Such as: homicides committed by hit-and-run-drivers. Why, just yesterday (fr. the Times):

An 85-year-old Russian-born physicist was killed by a hit-and-run driver yesterday during his early-morning jog in Coney Island, the police said. The physicist, Ilya Aptekar, was crossing Cropsey Avenue at Bay Parkway about 5:20 a.m., witnesses told the police, when he was struck by a westbound car. Witnesses described the car as a large dark-colored sedan, perhaps burgundy or dark green, and either a Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquis. Witnesses also said that Mr. Aptekar was crossing with the light, according to an investigator.

Selective prosecution with banning of some groups of twenty or more throughout the city--sounds like NYC is big on the old southern state slave codes. Throughout arrests cops saying "Just doing my job". They know in their gut who and what they work for.

so ummmm.....i wonder why ut is that there is sooooo much conflict over the nyc ride? or maybe san francisco? but do you ever hear about the ride in Houston, TX? most certiantly not....the houston chronicle actually did a peice on some of the riders.....well not because they got arrested, not because anyone cares that we break the rules down here.....just because no one has a clue what CM is down here....HA~!
