Thursday, July 22, 2004 "Love and pieces" During this heated political year, when U.S. citizens are divided equally between John F. Kerry and George W. Bush, along with the Republicans’ not-secret weapon of victory, Ralph Nader, the polarization is ferocious. Many letters to the editor of The Times reflect pro-Bush and anti-Bush, pro-Kerry and anti-Kerry credos. The perspectives of many writers are correct: this election represents one of the most important moments of history for our nation through the past 72 years. Expressing one’s opinion is a right in our nation — a right that residents in a majority of other nations don’t fully or even partially possess. Free speech is terrific, provided the utterances don’t descend into slander. Montclair’s the home for many anti-war activists and several liberal activist organizations. The local groups will be joining others from throughout the United States to protest the policies of the Bush administration during the Republican National Convention in New York City next month. For their participants, the protests are affirmations and evidence of their own solidarity. Unfortunately, many rallies staged worldwide by anti-war and anti-“globalization†groups often are besmirched by groups of so-called revolutionary anarchists who join the throngs of marchers and then break off to destroy, vandalize and foment fear. The anarchist swarms adhere to foul polemics that rationalize terrorism as “direct action,†equating their destruction of people’s property and assaults on human beings as akin to rent strikes or consumer boycotts. But Gandhi and M. L. King they are not. The anar-chists, usually seen on television footage as dressed in dark clothing with scarves concealing their faces as they set fire to garbage cans and shatter windows, hate governments, hate private investment, hate elections, hate unions, hate companies, hate us and hate you. But they support “the people.†There are folks in Montclair who seek to improve the world by replacing the Bush ad-ministration. They must recognize that the destructive and self-centered mayhem espoused by direct-action anarchists guarantees that the vast preponderance of people who could be convinced by rational and reasonable demonstrations will be repelled by lawless destruction and fear-mongering. However insignificant their numbers, the anarchists who inevitably show up at left-wing protests discredit the demonstrations. Instead of proving a point through reasoned argu-ment and ballot success, the anarchists would rather use their fundamentally flawed polemics to violently skewer fellow humans. The Times urges all people from Montclair who travel into Manhattan next month in opposition to the Bush administration to disavow the revolutionary anarchists. Reject their violence. Spurn the anarchists’ gnarled rationalizations http://www.montclairtimes.com
