An impassioned crowd of roughly 700 gathered on 2nd Avenue from 42nd to 43rd Streets in protest of the current Israeli attack on Lebanon and the ongoing occupation of Palestine.

“We are here to call an end to Israeli aggression against Palestine and Lebanon…No more attacks on Palestinians and Lebanese civilians – that is our message today,” said Riham Barghouti, a member of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions Campaign in New York and a member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.

This is the seventh day of Israel’s bombing campaign on Lebanon since the capture of 2 Israeli soldiers by the Lebanese Shia Islamic organization, Hezbollah. Currently, 230 Lebanese and 25 Israelis have been reported dead. A large proportion of these are civilians.

Despite the near 100 degree weather, the tightly packed group crammed behind metal barriers enthusiastically chanted, “stop the killing, stop the bombs, Israel out of Palestine” and “stop bombing Lebanon.”

Ms. Barghouti mentioned yesterday’s appearance of Senator Hillary Clinton at a pro-Israel rally, provoking loud boos and jeers among the crowd.
