Rare case of 96 hour detention of international, possible trial on
Sunday
Yesterday, after planting the Palestinian flag upon the Israeli army
camera tower which watches over the village of Bil'in, and remaining
up there for over five hours, Puerto Rican activist Tito Kayak was
arrested by Israeli forces. The military commander is using his
authority to keep Tito in jail for 96 hours, a practice which is
regularly used on Palestinians. In the case of a Palestinian's arrest,
after the 96 hours and before seeing a judge, the military commander
many times will extend the holding time for another 96 hours.
Tito's is a very rare case. In situations like this, with Israeli or
international activists, arrestees are normally held for 24 hours or
less. However, Tito is still currently in jail under the 96 hour
detention practice. Tito was scheduled to leave Palestine on Sunday.
Tito may face trial at the Ofer military court on Sunday.
Tito's action was part of the weekly Friday demonstrations against
Israel's Apartheid Wall in the village of Bil'in, which has stolen 60%
of the land from the village. Yesterday's demonstration came after the
Second Annual Bil'in International Conference on Non-violence.
Speakers included Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, Palestinian Information
Minister, Vice president of the European Parliament Luisa Morganitini,
and Noble Peace laureate Mairead Corrigan, who was shot in the leg by
Israeli forces with a rubber-coated steel bullet at Friday's
demonstration.
