This year the farmers market was awarded funding through the Project for Public Spaces as part of a national initiative to strengthen public markets. This grant will allow the program to develop a new urban farm site (recruiting immigrant growers and longtime residents) and to conduct a targeted nutrition and cooking education series at WIC (Women Infants and Children) centers throughout East New York. The grant is one of ten projects supported by Project for Public Spaces’ highly competitive initiative to diversify farmers markets nationwide, and is part of a three-year grant-making program, which began in 2005 and is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
The Grand Opening Celebration will feature the music of the Soul Shakers, “preserving the classical sound of doo-wop and R&B from the 1950s and 1960s,” courtesy of the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series. This year’s market will feature a range of exciting new products and old favorites – with homegrown fruits and veggies including organic and Caribbean specialties, raw honey, free range eggs, fresh fish and crabs, granola, homemade juices and baked goods, natural soaps and oils, and one of the best fried fish sandwiches in the city!
Joining the market this year will be over 20 new urban farmers who are cultivating plots in UCC’s new Hands and Heart Garden on New Lots and Alabama. East New York Farms! staff have been providing growers at this new 1/2 acre garden site with training and technical assistance since November 2006.
ENY Farms! is a community based program that brings together neighborhood gardeners, local entrepreneurs, youth leaders, and regional farmers to create a vibrant public market in East New York, Brooklyn. The ENY Farmers’ Market is one of the few markets in NYC that works closely with community gardeners as micro-entrepreneurs.
The project also engages 20 local youth in its Urban Agriculture Internship. Youth cultivate their own ½ acre urban farm, assist local market gardeners, and partner with adults in the community to run a seasonal farmers’ market. In 2006, these dedicated youth and adult gardeners grew over 11,000 pounds of vegetables right here in East New York!
