I would suggest that people not romanticize what Tibet was like when it was ''free '', Pre-1959 Tibet was a primitive , feudal society in which peasants and the few urban workers were serfs and women were essentially slaves .
How about a International effort for a truly free Tibet, whether a autonomous part of the PRC or independent , in which the Dali Lama has not more power than a Catholic Cardinal here ? No to Stalinism and Theocracy!

Tibets choice is their business. I assume you also don't like the Palestinin's 11th century choice of theocractic Hamas? But here's some news for you- its self determination- they get to chose- it isn't something for some "white man's burden" Westerner to decide for them.
Stop judging by Western standards. What the Tibetans want is SELF determination. They want to decide. Not China, and certainly not you.

Judaism is a religion. Though there were certianly people who practiced it in what is now Palestine-Israel going back to classical times those numbers were relatively small until about the time of WWI.

Many of the Palestinians who were ethncially cleansed in the 1940's have also been living there since at least classical times. In fact many of them are closer geneologically to the people livng in Palestine-Israel during the time of Saul, David and Solomon, then the European settlers who arrived in large numbers in the 2Oth century. Although human settlement in Palestine goes back considerably before the time of Saul/David/Solomon. The City of Jericho dates to the 7/8th millenium BCE.

Concerning religious affiliation of these people, who is to say that todays Palestinian Christians and Muslims were not the Hebrews of Abrahams time-- even though there is no definitive proof that Abraham did in fact exist.

As to Hamas, it is a relatively new organization. Going back to the 1970's? As much as one may dislike it, claiming that it has or encouraged slavery is not credible. Will not comment on torture, as the zionists and the imperialists are as adept at its practice as the "Tibetan Gelugists were. What evidence can you present to show that Hamas practices it? As to rape of children and women, again what evidence do you have that Hamas engages in it? There are plenty of historical accounts of such behavoir by the Gelugists.

Back to Tibet i have mixed views . I liked a earlier post (By Lee?) that rejected both Theocracy and Stalinism . Even if Tibet should really be part of the P.R.C. that doesn't excuse the brutal repressive tactics used by the Chinese Cops and soldiers .

Despite what Adolf Hitler may have believed or what you may believe they are not. Judaism is a religion, nothing more. Though of course European settler colonists who practice Judaism, just as Ethopian settler colonists who practice Judaism do fall in to distinct "ethnic" groupings. But that is based on language and geography.

However that is not the issue. The issue is the denial of human and political rights, to many of the people living in Palestine-Israel in the 1940's because of religous and "ethnic" litmus tests. Those people were ethnically cleansed because of those distinctions. They are to this day prevented from returning to their homes(homeland) even though under international law they have every right to do so.

The people in the TAR area of China were never forceably removed from their homes. The issue in the TAR, has to with governance. The Chinese central government, which had involvement there for many hundreds of years prior to the Western Imperial occupation and decimination of China in the early 19th century, were only able to restablish their authority there after WWII. They removed a retrograde theocratic clique that was rather repressive, and despite what you may have been told, was only one of several Buddhist tendencies in that area.

Old habits die hard. That imperial desire to control China by Western transnational corporations is still very much in evidence, as witness the latest propaganda campaign surrounding the Gelugists.

China's only claim to Tibet, and a lot more of its current territory, come from the Yuan dynasty. The Yuan dynasty were Mongols, it was founded by Kublai Khan. Going back to the time of the Tang dynasty, the Chinese were routinely getting their asses handed to them by the Tibetans, they even managed to install a puppet emperor on the throne at one point. Read up on your history and compare the current territorial claims of China to the historical China proper.

The native "Tibetans" whose various kingdoms began no earlier than the 7th century, the Mongols[Yuans], who took over China, making claim to the area in the 13th century and installing a friendly gelugist puppet regime in the 16th century (supposedly a forbear of the present gelugist regime, even though there are questions about the actual connection between the two) and the various western imperialists, whose interest and claim goes back no earlier than the 18th century. Is that correct?

Tibet, at least 1,400 years old, is one of the world's oldest nations, has its own language, its own religion and even its own ethnicity. Over 1 million of its people have been killed by the Chinese, its culture has been systematically obliterated, 6,000 of its 6,200 monasteries have been looted and destroyed, and most of its monks have been tortured, murdered or exiled.

Give tibet back to the tibetans

"Tibet" the provinces of Amdo, Kham, and Ü-Tsang are part of China and will remain so, despite transnational corporate/western imperialist war criminal attempts of separating them from the rest of China and installing the 11th century retrogade Gelugist theocratic clique.

China is fully able, and willing, to defend its borders, whatever the cost.

An interesting way to pass the time: Watching out for the police spies!
Whilst talking to a couple of other tourists at the Barkor Cafe, we noticed a man of about 40 years old sitting alone at the next table drinking a beer. He was looking away, but seemed very attentive, with one ear pointed ominously towards us.
We started to talk louder, saying "hey look at that soldier on the rooftop over there with his gun. He's doing such a good job helping these poor Tibetans..." the ear pricked up and the man sat bolt upright.
We said hello to him, but he pretended not to understand. We then asked him "hey you're a policeman aren't you...?" At that he left his beer and walked away grinning at us.
I have had similar experiences in a restaurant in Golmud.
You can see plain clothes police men also. You could recognize them by their army-issue shoes and sweaters and they often wore floppy canvas sun hats. There were a couple of them conspicuously hanging around the check-in at Gongar (Lhasa) airport when I left last.

This is the paranoid totalitarian state in action. These people are charged with the job of keeping tabs on the foreigners and the locals too; the furtive spies will rush back to file their report on what you were saying...

They are nothing to worry about, just a distraction from the sightseeing.

NOTICE

Ladies and Gentleman Welcome to Lhasa. So that you may have a safe and enjoyable travels, we would like you to be aware of the following government regulations:

1) Foreigners travelling in China must abide by Chinese law and must not endanger the national security of China, harm its Public interests, disturb the Public order, or engage in any other acticvities incompatible with tourists status.

2) If Chinese citizens are holding a rally or demonstration, it is strictly forbideden for foreigners to participation, follow along with, take pictures or video film any of these affairs. Foreigners are not allowed to interfere in Chinese internal affairs.

3) Foreigners are forbidden to distribute any propaganda material and join in any religious activity.

4) In accordance with regulations, foreigner tourists must go through all registration formalities and stay only at a designated hotel. Without prior permission it is forbidden to travel in unopened areas, to use undesignated transportation, to operate individual business or privately take up an occupation.

5) It's forbidden to visit and photograph the sky burial site according to the local government's regulations for the minority nationality's habits and customs. The tourist who breaks the regulation will be punished strictly.

6) For safety reasons, it is strictly forbidden for foreign tourists to travel by tractor or other privately operated means of transport. If by any hance a traffic accident happens, under these circumstances you will be responsible for your own actions and the results.

7) Valuables should deposit in checkroom, otherwise, the hotel won't be responsible for the loss.
