As the country celebrated it 232nd birthday we where reminded of what this country was founded on. July 4th in the Park was organized by Norman Siegel, The Granny Peace Brigade, and Grandmothers Against The War, to honor to founding principles of this country: Free speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, equal protection under the law, and due process of the law.
“What differentiates us from most of the world is the Constitution of the United States. Until this President, the Constitution was our guide, this is no longer so.” States Hilda B. Classon of the Granny Peace Brigade.
The Granny Peace Brigade is legendary for their arrest in October 2005 when they tried to enlist at the Times Square recruitment center. They where later acquitted with the help of Norman Siegel on the Constitutional grounds of the right to peacefully assemble.
Many people stopped and listened as crowd members recited parts the Constitution. Many of the people who came up and spoke where grandmothers who reminded the audience why we celebrate July 4th and called for peace.
This was not an anti-Bush protest, but a pro-peace movement. Many people grow up in this country with know or understanding the documents this country was founded on. But this demonstration reminded us that our country is not ruled by a single leader, but by the people.
We all need to continue to support this message of peace rain or shine, and follow the words not only of John Lennon but many others.
“Think Peace
Act Peace
And spread the word
that we are all here
to heal the world”
-- yoko ono July 2008
