Thanks to all the folks who packed the courtroom in support of Juanita Young yesterday (and to Gina for the cool Juanita t-shirts!) - the trial has officially begin.

Those who didn't make it out yesterday missed the opening arguments and the testimonies of the arresting officer, Louis Hernandez, and the landlord, Tom Hemmerle. Both may return for additional testimony, and the City Marshal will be testifying Thursday, along with other witnesses.

Juanita's lawyer, Geoffrey Stewart, had opposed the reduction of Juanita's charge (from A misdemeanor to B misdemeanor, which entails a judge trial as opposed to a jury trial), but the judge did not see the necessity of a jury trial i.e. a trial where residents of the Bronx would decide on Juanita's case as opposed to solely the judge himself.

The trial continues this Thursday, September 8th at 10am in Part T3 (room 504 on the 5th floor). PLEASE ATTEND IF YOU CAN, throughout any part of the day (today we went from 11am to 5pm, w/a lunch break at 1pm), as the judge has been rather transparent with assisting the DA's prosecution and we need to let him know we're all watching and listening!
