ISM-NYC Olive Harvest Campaign Training 2005 October 1st and 2nd in NYC

The International Solidarity Movement's New York City support group (ISM-NYC) will be holding a training in NYC on Saturday and Sunday, October 1st and 2nd from 12:00 - 5:00 each day for activists who plan to go to Palestine this autumn for the Olive Harvest with ISM or with other non-violent direct action groups. The training will be conducted in coordination with other members of the Palestine Activist Forum of New York (PAFNY).

The call for international volunteers to come to Palestine from October 15- November 15 for the Olive Harvest was issued by Palestinian farmers and agricultural organizations, in coordination with the International Solidarity Movement and the International Women's Peace Service. International and Israeli volunteers join Palestinians each year to harvest olives, in spite of efforts by Israeli settlers, soldiers and bulldozers to destroy this vital piece of Palestinian life. The presence of internationals during harvest time has proven in the past to help limit and decrease the severity of attacks.

The Olive Harvest Campaign provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time with Palestinian families in their olive groves and homes. International volunteers stay in Palestinian homes in West Bank communities and accompany Palestinian families to their olive groves to de-escalate violence, serve as witnesses to document and expose attacks by settlers supported by the Israeli Armyג on farmers and their families. Additionally, volunteers will have the opportunity to join Palestinians in nonviolent protests throughout the West Bank. (see the ISM website for more details:_ ( )For the October 1 and 2 NYC training, we also welcome the attendance of individuals who are considering traveling to Palestine some time in the future and who would simply like to learn more about what it might be like
to go to Palestine to support non-violent direct action.

Topics covered in last fall's NYC Olive Harvest Training included: Current Situation on the Ground; Logistics for Working with ISM; Cultural sensitivity; Issues specific to women, queers, Jews, people of color; Reporting back from Palestine and the US; What to expect at the airport; Legal issues; Affinity groups and consensus decision-making; Relationship building w/Palestinian leadership and community organizations; Dealing with stress; Organizing a support team/talking with family and friends; Media; History & philosophy of direct action tactics. The exact topics to be covered October 1-2 will be finalized based on the number of participants, needs on the ground and needs of the trainees.

Before joining ISM in Palestine in the field, ISM Palestine will also require that all volunteers attend a two day training in Palestine. Some topics, like non-violent tactics and planning a direct action, will be covered in much greater depth at the Palestine training.

The location of the NYC training is still to be determined, but please save the dates of October 1-2 now, and stay tuned. If you plan to attend, or if you have any questions please e-mail: (mailto: , and we will keep you updated on the training location.
