I was blessed today by getting to go see Cindy Sheehan deliver the keynote address at the Brooklyn Parents for Peace 3rd Annual Peace Fair. Dressed in black sweat pants, a black "Stop" sign t-shirt with the word "War" penciled underneath and sneakers, Cindy spoke about her son Casey, about the war in Iraq and about her time in Crawford, Texas. Rather then speaking with notes or from a prepared speech, she spoke from what she called her "broken heart". She called the White House a "concentration of evil" and darkness and spoke of how the "light" of the peacemakers can overcome that evil.

Cindy told us why she began her mission for peace and how a poem written by her daughter bought her out of her apathy and grief after Casey's death. She wiped tears from her eyes as she quoted “Have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son?......Have you ever heard the sound of a nation being rocked to sleep?”.

She told us of her plans for the coming days, when the two-thousandth American soldier is killed in Iraq, how she will tie herself to the White House fence and be arrested and how she will tie herself to the fence again and again until the war in Iraq is ended.

She told us about spending Thanksgiving in Crawford, Texas and how she wants to tell Laura Bush to remember to bring the turkey.

After her speech was over, and after a short question and answer session, Cindy stood at the side of the auditorium as people lined up to speak to her. I was fortunate enough that she signed my program “Peace Cindy Sheehan”. After I thanked her and we hugged and kissed each other, she thanked me for coming.

This woman is so genuine, so gentle and loving and kind that I have no doubt that the light she spoke of will continue to burn brightly and continue to grow and that with the work of all of us the concentration of evil will eventually be destroyed.
