100,000 RINGS: In Remembrance of the Iraqi Dead

New York -- Beginning at 12 noon on October 24, bells will toll in remembrance of the more than 100,000 Iraqis who have died as a consequence of the occupation in Iraq. A bell will toll each minute to memorialize the Iraqi fallen. We want to send a message to our Iraqi brothers and sisters that we are not indifferent to their grief. As the bell sounds, we also grieve for every deceased and wounded Iraqi, for every person tortured and detained and disappeared. We grieve for every orphan and widow. Participants will maintain a daily presence from October 24 through October 28 at the following locations:

One year ago on October 29, 2004 the British medical journal “The Lancet” published the epidemiological study estimating that upwards of 100,000 Iraqis dead as a consequence of the U.S. occupation on Iraq. The “Bell Ringing” ceremony is an initiative of Voices for Creative Nonviolence. VCNV seeks to build and strengthen active nonviolent resistance to the U.S. war against Iraq’s people; to foster international peace teams; and to challenge the United States’ “Global War on Terror”, which is a war OF terror far more than it is a “war ON terror”.
