A CHILD PRISONER OF AUSTRALIA

A CHILD PRISONER OF AUSTRALIA

A group of Australians concerned about the constant media reports of human rights violations against
asylum seekers in Australia's immigration detention centres, decides to embark on a 2-months/12000
kilometre journey around the country on an old bus. The mission of the Refugee Freedom Bus was to visit
as many people in detention as possible, to raise awareness among the communities on its route, as well
as to expose some of the mistreatments against the people held in the desert-camps.

"Waking Up The Nation" takes you on this inspiring trip around the continent, as the strange mix of house
wives, uni students, hippies and teenagers have their run-ins with overzealous police officers, racist small-
town locals and burly detention centre guards.
Most importantly this documentary introduces you to many of the countless unfortunate men, women and
children detaineed in what have come to be known as Australia's hell-holes, by giving the people a chance
to tell their stories in front of a camera. Additional footage smuggled from inside some of these prisons
prove that something is going on out in Australia's deserts, that perhaps people should be ashamed of.
