HARD-HIT 'HOODS: Still haven't gotten their '06 NYCCOCHAC money
As many of you know, this week marks the 25th anniversary of the first federal notice of a strange new epidemic that would soon come to be known as AIDS. And on the city front, we're angry and frustrated to have to "celebrate" the date by learning that the Department of Health (DOH) has not yet executed the master contract for $2.6 million in New York City Communities of Color HIV/AIDS Coalition (NYCCOCHAC) funding for FY06!
That's right—even though countless struggling city groups awarded on average $42,000 in March were told they had until June to execute an advocacy-based project around responding to HIV/AIDS in their community...and even though they have admirably done so, doing everything from launching websites to "mapping" parts of the city for HIV/AIDS information...they still have not been reimbursed for such work because DOH has not even paid the master contractee, the non-profit Community Resource Exchange.
That's just not fair. How can the city say it cares about stopping HIV/AIDS in hard-hit communities of color when it can't even get this small amount of money out to them for much-needed projects...
