This year's parade was marked as usual by puerto rican pride and 1 million street partiers, but also by running conflicts between free culture and corporate sponsorship, between anti-colonial sentiment and political & military recruiting, and between rebel youth and new york's finest.

The latin kings, a street gang turned militant political organization, took their place in the parade for the first time. Last year, they were rounded up and arrested by the hundreds, while this year saw at least 50 arrests and continued police harassment of the Puerto Rican community.
