New Democratic Majority is pleased to announce our 2006 primary and select general election endorsements. The results are as follows:
In an unprecedented show of support, Members of New Democratic Majority endorsed the candidacy of Eliot Spitzer for Governor of the State of New York, with 96% of ballots cast. This near-unanimity reflects the membership's enthusiastic support for Spitzer's Progressive new vision of governance in this state.
For Attorney General, the membership chose Sean Patrick Maloney, with 56% of the votes cast. Maloney is a fresh, new face, and is running on a smart Progressive platform that would build on Eliot Spitzer's legacy in that office. Runners-up in this race were state party designee Andrew Cuomo with 27%, former Public Advocate Mark Green with 12%, and Charlie King with 8%.
In the hotly contested Congressional primary in the 11th District of New York, the membership, with 80% of ballots cast, overwhelmingly chose Chris Owens. We're very excited to be closing ranks with the entire Progressive community in our support of our longtime member Chris. When Chris is elected, he will not only continue the proud tradition of civil rights pioneers Shirley Chisholm and Major Owens in this district, but be the first active member of New Democratic Majority elected to the United States Congress. Runners-up were David Yassky, at 16% of votes, and Yvette Clarke and Carl Andrews, with 4% between them.
