GOOD OLE BOYS As we learned in school, the 1965 Voting Rights Act essentially made it possible for most Black people in the south to vote. What we didn’t learn is that it expires in 2007. Of course, congress just has to go ahead and renew it, so what’s the problem? Well, this. Southern republicans refused to renew the Voting Rights act yesterday because they feel that it unfairly singles out the South. That is unfair! I can’t think of a single piece of information that could possibly justify such a thing.* *Before the Civil Rights movement, Lowndes County, Alabama had about 12,000 Black citizens and exactly zero of them were registered to vote. But I’m sure they just hadn’t gotten around to it. I mean, what else could it be?
