teachers' movement

In a scene reminiscent of other recent battles in Mexico, the police attempted
to disrupt the Oaxaca teachers' strike in downtown Oaxaca City on Wed.,
June 14th. At 3 am a police helicopter flew low over the tent city where
30,000 teachers and supporters have been camped for weeks and shot
canisters of tear gas. Meanwhile, 3,000 state police armed with riot shields
and clubs entered the chaos and tore apart the roughshod shelters where the
teachers had been staying. At roughly 10 am the police retreated and the
teachers re-took the City Center.Since Wednesday, both sides after been
preparing for the next attack on the workers. On Friday, 400,000 marched in
Oaxaca to send a firm message against the repression by Gov. Ulises Ruiz Ortíz.
